I'll make this a table of contents post for my steel pen posts. They seem to be reasonably popular, but I only post them periodically, so they may get buried. Here are the ones I've posted so far. I'll keep adding as I go.

Thought I'd try something, see if anyone is interested.

Let's look at a single object, humble and everyday for it's time, and unpack some of its context and importance.

This is a "steel pen" from Gillott. They were sold by the gross in small paper boxes.

A photo of a shiny steel dip pen nib. It is laid out on a millimeter scale and is approximately 3.1 centimeters long. The imprint on the pen says, "Double Elastic. 604F. Joseph Gillott's" and "England" along the heel of the pen. It is a straight shaped pen with a strong grind, two shoulder slits and long tapered point which help with it's elasticity.

Was watching the birds today when they all alarmed and took off with a Cooper's Hawk in hot pursuit. Coop didn't catch anything and stuck around looking for stragglers before taking off.

This NYT story failed the reader by not digging deeper. One subject dropped out of college after one year (five years ago) and lists "Windows" as his skillset. Story should be: young conservatives who blame immigrants for their personal failures and whose lives won't be improved w/ fewer immigrants
NYT headline reads: "The Young People Fixated on Who Gets to Work in America For some Gen Z conservatives, H-1B visas are a hot new topic." Excerpt reads: "Take Mitchell Boone, a 27-year-old Trump supporter. Going through some old family photos. Christmas c. 1965-68.

There are so many presents because we had 7 kids and 6 adults at Christmases, and my uncle was a doctor, hence the fancy toy range. Love the aluminum tree.

Labour strikes aren’t new!

The first recorded strike in history took place in Egypt some 3,200 years ago!

The ‘Strike Papyrus’ records that tomb workers of King Ramesses III downed tools over pay and conditions circa 1157 BC!

My photo shows the front side (recto) of an ancient Egyptian administrative document written by the scribe Amunnakht in hieratic script (cursive writing of hieroglyphics). It is written in black ink on papyrus by the scribe Amunnakht. The papyrus is now a yellowy-brown colour and is worn in places. The document is known as the ‘Strike Papyrus’ and recounts that in November of Year 29 of the reign of Ramesses III, the royal tomb workers of Deir el-Medina stopped work for the first time and spent several days at the Theban necropolis in the temples of Tuthmosis III and Ramesses II. They demanded that the grain ratians for their work be distributed, and the authorities subsequently disbursed the grain rations. However, a few days later, the workers went on strike again, this time finding refuge in the temple of Seti I. Their refusal to retum to work stemmed fram the precarious working conditions, a situation they wanted to bring directly to the pharaoh. The last strike documented here was in January of the following year.
