A significant swathe of Birmingham was under water 2 weeks ago, after heavy rain, because the infrastructure can't cope with climate change, and the city council can't even unblock the drains because of austerity. Still wild to me that that's now somehow entirely routine.
More than 700,000 homes across the ten English councils now governed by Reform UK are projected to face medium or higher flood risk by the middle of the century, exclusive analysis of national modelling by Byline Times and Bylines Network shows.
Drowning in denial: one in five homes in Reform UK heartlands faces flooding in 25 years
Even as the party rolls back climate action, Reform-controlled councils sit on some of England’s worst rising flood risks

The UK, where the day after a decision to take half a million children out of poverty, the media & political world has been full of sneering at those same children & their families, labelling them as ‘Benefits Street’, while the same people are moaning about a tax on £2m mansions. Shameful stuff.

I’m determined to consign air pollution to the history books.

I want London to be the best place in the world to grow up. That’s why I gathered environment and health leaders with government to build on the progress since my first Clean Air & Health Summit in 2022.

A *huge* vaccine victory. I've been writing on this for years; Australia has seen remarkable progress in cervical cancer prevention with the HPV vaccine. I love seeing science triumph like this.
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

This is brilliant!
Also, I know we complain about the increasing amount of oversized SUVs on the road, but I’m not sure it reflects real life to have a convoy of 5 identical black Defenders. Perhaps except when they’re driving the King to the start of his favourite walk.

Disappointed with the BBC’s reply on The Celebrity Traitors and the rise in interest in the large SUVs it features. They say it’s not advertising because no money changed hands. But these vehicles are dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists and children and repeated screen time inevitably drives demand.

Professor Kevin Anderson delivers some granite hard truths @kevinclimate.bsky.social

"We need profound shifts in our social norms.

It is too late for non-radical solutions.

The UK is emitting far more than its fair share of greenhouse gases.

We need deep cuts in energy use."

Key point from the brilliant Prof @kevinclimate.bsky.social at the National Emergency Briefing, the UK's climate plans are based on the wildly untenable assumption that the country can have 3x its equitable share of the remaining global carbon budget for meeting the 1.5C guardrail.
