I write electronic music, produce/mix/master music, and produce a podcast about the something awful forums. None of them really make money but I do them because I love them and hey, that’s gotten me on the DEF CON soundtrack several times so good enough for me

finally mastering barre chords was this moment for me. it's a skill i had to learn and perfect and was so immensely satisfying to finally be able to play consistently. the robot will never know this feeling
There's a part of learning, which generative AI completely turns into dogshit, which is *doing something you could not have done before*
Whether it's drawing, playing an instrument, solving a physics problem, organizing an essay, you find yourself doing easily what previously you found overwhelming

impossible to describe how it felt in the mid-90s when "Possum Kingdom" was on the radio in good rotation, at work trying to mop up the glass/acid spill of a cartload of pickle boxes crashed on the floor while someone screams "Do you wanna die?" from a speaker cut into the drop ceiling.

what i do is a mix between art & craft & i know no computer can do it well. i know lots of weird technical & stylistic things, & love teaching other folks about them, even if i'm a bad teacher. wanna know how a compressor works? i'll do my best to explain it without resorting to "it's a magic box"
If you want to learn to make art, there are countless people out there willing to help you. The only thing is, you have to be willing to try. The AI pushers want what they perceive is the kudos for having made the art, but they don't want to try.
