Nerdy Texan living in Scotland
December 19, 2025 at 11:16 AM
Watching Trainspotting 2 in Glasgow, where the entire audience was falling out of their seat laughing at the Orange Lodge scene. I’ve no idea if that bit is funny to non-Scots; but people were in pain from laughter here.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

Reposting this on main, because this was probably the most challenging book I’ve ever read; and I’m incredibly proud of myself.
Epic poetry in Scots from 1470, about the life of William Wallace; a 100% unbiased and accurate account, guaranteed.
The Wallace
By Blind Harry

Read this if: You want the Venn diagram between Canterbury Tales and Braveheart. This is 15th Century poetry in Scots about how William Wallace was the best ever and the English deserved to get killed by him.

I’d forgotten the bizarre joy of trying to piece together an event after the fact by the social media memes. The Mamdani-Trump thing, especially when I have all mentions of Trump muted, was a fun challenge.

I thought I was ordering a translation, but I should have checked more carefully. So now I get to fumble through 15th century #Scots poetry.

I’m having a great time, it’s just slow going, and I need to read everything aloud in the accent of an old man from Fife

Let me tell you how tired I’m getting of AI being forced into software:
I have genuinely given thought to making Linux my next OS.

This is not ok, and is the sign of a sick and twisted society that is collapsing.

This is tech/marketing people leveraging decades of science fiction media presenting "AI" as generally encyclopedic and infallible. People think they're getting JARVIS, when what they're getting is the machine version of that annoying dude in your dorm confidently spouting bullshit on every subject
This marketing term is causing untold harm, of course, mostly to the naive and gullible. But it’s surprising how many educated and apparently intelligent people are placing an unwarranted degree of trust in these programmes.

I really like Mork Borg and all its derivatives, but the books are so stylized that I find they’re actually difficult to use at the table. It’s a beautiful mix of art and fonts and layout, but that does not really lend itself easily to practical use. #ttrpg

My son has learned that I am useless to him at night. If I go in when he’s upset at night, he stops crying, points at the door, then cries louder until I take him to his mother. He has no use for the boobless parent, I am only for playtime during the day.
