I would immediately delete my LinkedIn account with extreme prejudice, and never look back.
Hey artist/creator/writer/etc people: if tomorrow you were guaranteed a very comfortable living the rest of your life, how would that affect your relationship to social media?

New from me, at @vqr.bsky.social: a few years ago two people contacted me about a TEDx talk I once gave, “The Art of Haunting.”

When I replied I’d never given a TEDx talk, things just got weirder.

On AI, ghosts, what it means to tell a story, and what Italo Calvino saw coming 60 years ago. Enjoy!
The Art of Haunting
The email was innocuous enough. A woman wrote to me explaining how her partner had been talking about my work and how much he’d enjoyed it—in particular, he’d remembered me giving a TEDx talk about gh...

Microsoft: "Behold, I give you even more Copilot."

Notepad users: "You fucked up a perfectly good text editor is what you did. Look at it. It's got anxiety."
The AI features added to Notepad created a critical exploit vulnerable to loading a compromised txt file.

The fix is part of Patch Tuesday, so update your systems.

AI is not a feature I ever desired in Notepad. I should look into some alternatives...
AI-upgraded Notepad now exposes Windows users to critical exploit
A critical remote code execution vulnerability found in the AI-upgraded Windows 11 Notepad has fueled renewed criticism of Microsoft's forced AI feature creep.

"Push the button, Frank."
Does anyone else have an MST3K line they use regularly, even if it makes no sense out of context?

Because I have both "That'll keep your panfish down for a while." and "Come come, boys, we must confound Jerry at every turn!" from MST3K the movie alone.

The co-lo I used in 2006 had redundant power feeds from north and south (in case of cable cuts), massive on-prem battery banks, and a diesel generator with 5 days of fuel. What’s this clown show?
Windows Update and the Microsoft Store are experiencing issues due to a power outage at a Microsoft data center. Some M365 services are having issues too

“It depends.”
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

"Will this make the reader throw up in their mouth a little?"

I've got one for you, @glennf.com

I use iCloud for Windows (yes, my sanity is questionable) and, as of late last month, all those app-specific folders in Cloud were renamed like this ONLY ON MY WINDOWS PC

It’s like for a shocking number of people, the more money you get, the more money you want.

And you’ll NEVER cap out. It never ends.

If “more dollars” are all that you think will make you happy, you will absolutely never be happy.

I was always uneasy at the amount of information gathered by TikTok under ByteDance, and refrained from making an account. Guess that isn't changing anytime soon.
TikTok is now under US ownership and their new ToS reads like a guide to giving fascists everything they need to put you on a list.

They’re collecting information about immigration status, citizenship, sexual orientation, whether you’re trans or non binary and physical or mental disabilities.

Nice job. Thanks for reminding me to delete that account.

And we're back on the "OnlyPosts" feed for the foreseeable future.

Yes, I'm outraged. No, I'm not sticking my head in the sand. But I get enough first-order outrage and sharing without exposing myself to incessant second- and third-order reposting.
