Almost half the Waymos on California streets are driving around empty. They're either waiting for the next customer or en route for a pickup.

If robotaxis scale, anything close to that level of deadheading would create crushing gridlock.

Even knowing who Thomas Chatterton Williams is (because of people dunking on him) feels like a symptom of excessive exposure to US Discourse.

Considering the news that the Trump administration wants to mine the seafloor of the Mariana Trench, it's appropriate that @forbes.com wrote about the "ghost fish" today

Meet The Rare ‘Ghost’ Of The Deep Sea. Hint: It’s Only Ever Been Seen Alive Once
Meet the “ghost fish,” a phantom of the abyss. Here’s how we found the first ever proof of its existence just a few years ago.

I've written about "disordered counterpublics" groups that reinforce shared delusions Here, the LLM becomes a 1 person counterpublic. It mirrors assumptions, absorbs contradictions, & provides the sense of a responsive, confirming audience.
It is the architecture of disordered discourse, automated.

our local ”let’s do this” crowd tends to point to Japan as a success story of stopping immigration
the actual suicide of the West will be combining a rapidly aging population with hostility to migrants. however we must give credit to East Asia, especially Japan, for pioneering this model.

8 years ago Helsinki got the first four electric buses. Now they are around half of all buses in traffic and there are huge jointed ones too.
10 years ago hydrogen buses were hyped and many cities ordered them.

Today the picture is clear: electric buses rule, hydrogen buses whither.

Come to think of it, while concepts to future proof signpost nuclear waste sites are interesting as though experiments, the whole thing seems fairly pointless? A Riddley Walker society that has lost knowledge of the Addom won’t be able to dig up the stuff, and for an advanced civ it isn’t dangerous.

people might think little automated vehicles with total city maps are better than trains because you don't have to walk and wait 8 minutes for a train, but that small amount of geographic and temporal synchronization increases the capacity of the system by orders of magnitude

So people who want to change the trajectory of where AI is in society today should start by noting that *current approaches to stopping adoption have failed*. That is a factual, measurable statement. I don’t believe repeating them will suddenly start working, maybe some people think so, but I don’t.

This silly cyberpunk era:
Was surprised by a gnome the size of a foam estinguisher with one extremely bright eyeslit waddling on the sidewalk.
Actually a toddler wearing a bike helmet with a led striplight on the forehead.

A weird board game?
No, the etymology for the word "pedigree"!! 🤯
The origin of 'pedigree'. This type of C12 figure (not a family tree but a way of calculating relatedness – the titles of various relatives have not been put in the circles) looked like a crane's foot, thought medieval folk. So 'pied de grue' and hence 'pedigree'. Source in alt.

there's a lovely James C. Scott line about how "the same mechanisms can be used to track cholera or round up Jews"
Bureaucracy is essential to freedom, it’s just hard to see this because not only can it enable tyranny, the mechanisms that make freedom possible superficially resemble tyranny as well. Postal services and secret police alike keep standardized registries of the names and homes of the citizenry.
Look it's weird to say "the city is liberation. Bigness is liberation. Bureaucracy is liberation." But it so often is. The village is inherently tyrannical. Sherly Jackson knew this.

partner’s mother was visiting over the weekend. She had a store-bought tuna sandwich with her:
Here, take this sandwich! it is horrible.
Uh, ok how do you know?
Shop was two for the price of one and I ate one.

Said sandwich that travelled 4 hours by train is now sitting in our fridge
