I've written about "disordered counterpublics" groups that reinforce shared delusions Here, the LLM becomes a 1 person counterpublic. It mirrors assumptions, absorbs contradictions, & provides the sense of a responsive, confirming audience.
It is the architecture of disordered discourse, automated.

Imo a good example of a low-stakes claim that you easily can present with sufficient confidence (something that people do all the time), and if no-one present is a weird kind of nerd or a domain expert that protests it might easily go unchecked and proliferate.

was chatting at the office like ”didn't Charles Lindbergh run for US president” and then checking it from wikipedia and no, that was in *several* alt-history works. We're in an unprecedented period where this sort of stuff can be looked up in real time, 30 yrs ago you would seed new myths like that.

Which also leads to the speculation that future redevelopment of technological civilization could be done for if things go full Riddley Walker, because there is no easy coal left to do a re-run with.

Yeah wasn’t the point with the pumps that they were terrible efficiency-wise, but due to those particular conditions happened to be competitive in that specific context

Fun thing is that it seems all-electric long-haul trucks right now are at 1870s steam ships vs sail as compared to diesel.

Keep wondering if there is an alternate timeline where we could have reached that battery performance, say, in the 1950s?

Just checked recently, steam became generally viable for ships as late as past the 1870s, because only by then the engines were efficient and high-pressure enough to fully outcompete sailing. All the coal took too much room before.

Minimal group paradigm, Stereolab has a little singsong introduction of this social psychology concept www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDwA...

So people who want to change the trajectory of where AI is in society today should start by noting that *current approaches to stopping adoption have failed*. That is a factual, measurable statement. I don’t believe repeating them will suddenly start working, maybe some people think so, but I don’t.

Also: in theory there's a lot of nice public domain imagery available, but in practice it can be quite daunting to find something suitable, even as a professional designer. Openverse is a nice search that covers several museum collections openverse.org/image/3c43b4...
