I've had a few 'what do you do' convs recently, and everyone on hearing I'm an author comes out with "so how do you come up with ideas?", just like every book or movie about a writer has them staring numbly into space because they don't have an idea for the next book. And look, that is Not It.

I don't write my books chronologically, like page one to page 400. Instead, I can have 150 pages of notes, dialogue snippets, and etc. and I'll hop around and flesh out various scenes. So I can have 40k or 70k but huge gaps between scenes and chapters, still.

In Texas, a new law has redefined “parental rights” to mean that a single parent now has the right to remove a book from libraries district wide because the the story of a boy unicorn with eyelashes offends them.

Had a moment yesterday where I almost threw out the #wip. Then finished reading God's War and reminded myself how many passes it took to layer all that in. Went back to the #wip, did some world building layering, and felt much better about it. It's the first half that's always the hardest.

I think the fact it's harder and harder to opt out of having a fucking mediocre insensate program write for you is the most infuriating thing. It helps that like her I write longhand drafts, but having to disable things in Word or just ignore them is becoming annoying AF.
