Alien is the same. Alien, Aliens, and even Alien 3 is about mothers. And I feel like movies like the Blade Runner sequel, the Dune remakes, Interstellar, Inception, etc. have completely missed this in their worldbuilding. It's like cleverness without credit?

I mean it's about how much the world might fucking suck if men (imperialism, colonialism, greed, cops) are not held accountable. And mothers are the fine thread running the movie from beginning to endβthe reminder made clear by their obvious absence.

And when it comes time to make movies of their own, they all want to make Blade Runner. Or Alien. Or whatever it is. They want to make a move they can continue to escape toβand they think this will be accomplished with cleverness or intricate plots or aesthetics. But they've missed the point.

These dudes love a movie like Blade Runner because it's validating escapismβthe future world still looks like their world. Men are still powerful. There are cops. Women are sexual objects. It's not that men love these things. It's that these things don't challenge men. So they love Blade Runner.

I think what I dislike so much about Chris Nolan and Denis Villeneuve is the way they worldbuild as men.

Whenever I read something a physicist has written about time, I think, "Ok but what you really mean is a specific measurement." Because time is just another thing we measure. Like volume. Or love. Or bone density.
The real head explodey stuff is what if there is something else besides measurement.

What I mean is. We measure time because we CAN, but the universe is under no obligation to make sense to us, certainly not according to how we decide to measure it.

I don't know if they were trying to temper my complaint about people being threatened by sincerity or if they were just projecting. But absolutely you need time to cook. And especially for neurodivergent people it may not be true at all.
