Once again, immigration is not even a problem. Immigrants are not more criminal, they don't cost jobs, they don't harm the economy. There is no reason for any of this. It is hurting ourselves to hurt them.

I'm an honest-to-God open migration guy, but I understand why people aren't. I do not understand the delight in a person weeping because they're being forced to leave or separated from a child, or any kind of joy taken in seeing someone upset to witness this sort of thing.

This isn't the most important thing now, but I'd love it if gov't agencies weren't allowed to post anything on social media but info. That could of course be done in better or worse ways but having the DHS make demands while addressing me as "citizen" is a repulsive encroachment on private life.

I've not seen anyone else talk about is so I don't know if I'm alone on this, but I've always regarded software engineering to be as much an art as it is a science, and that it takes an artist to write truly good software.

Partisanship, though deplored by the Founders, was an inevitable result of the Constitution's design, just like a magnet instantly sorts iron filings to its poles. If all power goes to whoever gets 50% +1 votes, then people will form coalitions to get there.
Johnson surrendered the political gains that 100s of 1000s of soldiers had died for and still avoided an impeachment conviction. Even Nixon probably could have survived impeachment. It's never worked because this was one of those tools written before the framers understood partisanship existed.

Put otherwise: a world of countries behaving themselves, trading, and just more or less getting along should be the goal. In the long run, everyone wins in a world of boring, boring abundance.

Hegseth’s Pentagon “renaming” these bases after obscure veterans with the same names as the Confederates the bases were originally named for has all the subtlety of a school bully putting his hand in your face and yelling “I’m not touching you! I’m not touching you!”

I understand that a lot of folks have been misled by fear-mongering and powerful regressive voices but it’s still astonishing to me that so many have fallen for the idea that oppressively policing other people’s gender identity and expression could in any way be part of an enlightened future.

The only throughline to me seems a desire to preserve an imaginary past. For a certain type of conservative, that's happy peasants living off the land locally. For a certain type of leftist, it's happy peasants living off the land that they can visit on a backpacking trip.

I know not everyone is down for free trade and open immigration, but separate from the particulars, it's both sad and scary to me that every day Earth's countries seem to be closing the doors. There's plenty to complain about with the post-WWII order, but also so many good things taken for granted.

Dunno if I'm alone in this but I've noticed that when I encounter someone who is actually, for real, straightforwardly racist... I tend to assume there's something else going on? Like surely the answer isn't simply "they hate these people." Like they're trying to be edgy or performative.

Even more relevant now that Texas voters have apparently decided teen suicide rates aren't high enough for their liking.
I would like to propose a new amendment to the Constitution:

"The right of the people to access medical care shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State."

I'll wait - but not for long.

Unpopular opinion: you fundamentally cannot trust an institution to care for people's lives when that same institution is in the business of convincing those people that things will be better for them in "the next life".
Indiana's Christian nationalist Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith says "it's not the government's job to feed people" and so tens of millions of people losing SNAP benefits because of the government shutdown represents "a great opportunity for the local church to step up."
