Amazing, depressing article about RFK Jr by Michael Scherer in The Atlantic. This graf at the end stayed with me. Our national policy is now based on the difference between 17 and 21 outcomes out of populations of 22000. As usual, hard to know if it is stupidity or dishonesty.

Sad to hear about reductions at the MIT Libraries… I have happy memories of digging around in the ancient, musty-smelling stacks to find an obscure journal article, or going looking for a single oddball book & finding even more interesting things on nearby shelves.

Happy birthday to David Ortiz, who is 50.

Still can’t figure out why the Cardinals kept pitching to him in ‘13.

The Ashes - known to me as my biennial attempt to pass myself off as a cricket fan - gets underway this week.

There's something really very wonderful about 5 day, unlimited over test cricket that, for me at least, cannot be reproduced in T20, ODIs or any other audience friendly format.

This is the way.
relatedly, your images, text, and especially graphs/figures can almost always be bigger than you're making them

one thing I force myself to do is never present multi-panel figures in talks. just put each panel on its own slide then it will be huge. it's hard to read graphs from far away!

Stopped in the Rockwell museum in western Mass a few years ago. Surprisingly great.
65 years ago on Nov. 14, little Ruby Bridges was escorted into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Norman Rockwell, renowned for blissful depictions of Americana, did this remarkable painting for Look magazine. Printed as a double page, over-size spread, it's his masterpiece.

The Sandwich Guy’s prosecutor seems unfamiliar with both baseball and the meaning of the verb “spike”
We have reached the moment the footlong was flung. “He spikes it, throws it like a baseball.” It strikes Agent Lairmore in the chest — “he says he could feel it.” Government acknowledges prosecution is not alleging he needed medical treatment.

WHAT A SPEECH. Read the whole thing via the link. My fave:

“More than a million of us stood in our churches, in gymnasiums, in community centers, as we filled in the ledger of democracy. And while we cast our ballots alone, we chose hope together.”
The full transcript of Zohran Mamdani's acceptance speech is very much worth reading in full. Even if you don't agree with your politics, it's very beautifully put together.
