I don't really celebrate Christmas (tho giving gifts to your friends to show you how much you love em is fun) but I do take the time each year to look back on the things I endured, accomplished, and took in, and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself for making it this year so here's a thread! 😸

The Democrats want you to believe body cameras will stop this.
Video from this morning shows ICE agents deploying tear gas outside a Minneapolis preschool as parents shout, “This is a preschool! There’s kids here!”

A basic tenet of my worldview is that fascism is very hard to sustain due to the fundamental rowdiness of people. You have to do so much for so long to contain it. You will never have enough guys. Eventually you just give up and start killing people but you go to sleep surrounded by the feral living

Fabulous documentary about the history of toy and board game production!
I wanted to know who designed an old board game I loved. I found out he made over fifty games he was never credited for, in a career spanning more than three decades.

Yes, you can make games about horrors but you need to actually have something to say about them and then be incredibly careful that your game is actually saying those things & not the opposite. And this requires not only skill and thoughtfulness but also doubt.

It seems there's been an overall dearth of writing about Baby Steps, but is anyone aware of any writing on the game from a disability perspective?

"it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best", which is one reason why bosses and CEOs are its biggest proponents, they despise their workers and ofc imagine the work they do to be simpler than it actually is
the discourse on what jobs are acceptable to replace with generative AI reveals a lot about what we think of other people's jobs

I don't know what to call the difference in representation of/support for/treatment of afab vs. amab nonbinary folks but it doesn't feel good.

I feel like my critical engagement with film especially, and other art perhaps, has come to involve recognizing/ provisionally accepting the "terms" on which a piece asks to be taken. Whether or not those terms make sense is valid but seems like a separate issue to "does the piece work within them"?

Haven't reshared a lot of my stuff this year but I think this is one of the best things I've written this year 👇

I think I'm gonna give up Letterboxd and StoryGraph this year, just keep notes in my bullet journal on the movies and books I want to see/have seen.

Hi all. As many of you know, my kid is trans and is probably the most awesome person alive. I hate to ask, since I know we are luckier than most, but medical care in the US is a disaster & I can't cover this on my own. Please share & help Lou become the version of himself he wants to be. ❤️

Surreal. I got to have my photography on display for an exhibit at an arts event last night called Solstice in Sound that was very cool (even though the venue had accessibility issues and like five times more people came than they seemingly expected lol)

First time I've had my work shown like this!

Anyway, as always when I get angry about all these big companies using generative AI pish, I renew my urging to invest your time in the art of smaller creators who believe in their work with a fervour no mega budget project can match

the only reason I've never used GenAI is because if I did i'd feel like a sick artistic fraud. filthy, like I'd sold my mother's wedding ring for drugs, or cheated on my wife with her sister or kicked a baby into a river. that's the only reason. well that and everything it makes looks shit.

I went to PAX Unplugged and had about 5,000 conversations with fans, developers, salespeople, and more. I distilled the general experience into some predictions about what the world of tabletop is going to look like in the short term.
