Emily Tucker argues that the AI regulation debate largely misses the point: the real threat to democracy is unchecked data extraction and accumulation that is fueling corporate power. “We can have mass surveillance, or we can have political self-determination. We can’t have both,” she writes.
To Have Democracy, We Must Contest Data | TechPolicy.Press
Emily Tucker makes the case for redlines for data, not AI—real limits on corporate data collection to protect democracy and political self-determination.

on destroying the internet
when i talk about "destroying the internet" i guess it should be read in concert with the comparison to iconoclasm, which did not destroy images entirely, but attacked images *in specific contexts* to argue their presence there was unnecessary or harmful.

similarly, my ultimate desire would be to "destroy" the internet by changing the shape of it: a general end to ubiquitous computing, for instance, with the understanding that while connection and communication is good, yes, great, there are places where computers and the internet do not need to be, or even places where they should not ever be.

as someone who's been online for a while, i've seen the shape of the internet change a ton, and i know it's going to change again. in fact, i think the primary appeal of the internet to the capitalist class is how quickly it can be changed, how quickly it can be made to move, how many situations where access to it can be made compulsory, and how significantly your life is impacted if something happens to even one of three or four websites.

so if i say "destroy the internet" i say it with the knowledge it will certainly be destroyed, is already right now being destroyed, regardless of what we do, because profit can be extracted when they shake their ant farms and wait for us to generate more culture in the ruin.

but i think there's a utopian horizon somewhere in there, because the protean nature of the internet also means *this doesn't have to be* what the internet is, and *this doesn't have to be* how we live on it.

Corporate clients often deem AI-generated art "good enough"—especially when it won't be public-facing and thus subject to backlash.

As such, artists describe dramatic reductions in work over the last two years, an influx of gigs fixing AI output for less money, and vanished jobs altogether.

Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing.

These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.
