The recent openRxiv meeting was a chance to present a vision for the future: a network of organizations working together to improve science communication and an ‘article of the future’ that is a constellation of linked web objects.

Another new policy from the geniuses in NIH leadership.

Apparently, ~70% of grant applications for most mechanisms will not be "triaged", i.e. not discussed at study section.

This is an increase from the ~50% level that has been in place for many years.

I don't know the rationale for this

Haven’t heard this yet but I can’t say it is unexpected
Just got an email from my SRO for the study section that was missed in October. Good news is that they are trying to reschedule ASAP (Dec/Jan). The bad news is that CSR is mandating that only the the top third (not half) of applications will get discussed for the next 2 rounds.

Reading is perhaps the most human of skills. No one is born with it so we have to spend years teaching it to our children. Literacy rates were once considered a measure of human progress. When reading is largely lost we call it a dark age; I fear we are facing another.

Another species no longer on the global Endangered list:
Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

A few decades after a Star Trek movie where the central conflict was the total extinction of the humpback, their numbers are rising fast enough to put them at "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List.
