Strong belief that arguing over the first half of this (characterizing the system as it is this moment) is far less important than emphasizing the second part (understanding that Trump and allies are engaged in a full-on attack on democracy and the rule of law - and that they can be defeated).
The leading scholars of democratic decline say the US "has descended into competitive authoritarianism" - we "ceased to be a full democracy in the way that Canada, Germany, or even Argentina are democracies" - but caution that it can be contested and reversed
