not sure how to square ‘no one person can be reasonably expected to pay for every media subscription’ with ‘sorely underpaid writers need to make a living’ but my inclination is not to locate that problem with any of the broke ass people on either end of the complaint

“the media is the message”

with long-form writing, readers have more context from which to discern tone/intent. part of the challenge w/social media is that you are not only working w/less material, you’re scrolling past competing voices and communication styles. it’s easier to misinterpret others.
This is something I and my fellow hyper literate types have a really hard time grasping. It’s frustrating to think you’re being really clear in writing, but still get wildly misunderstood because you’ve overestimated people’s literacy level.

This is…a real problem online.
People don't understand what is meant by "literacy" and the "literacy crisis".

Literacy isn't just not being able to physically read. Many people know how to see words and say words, which is basic reading. Literacy is being able to infer the correct information from what you read.

tbh it speaks to the ways ablism is so entrenched in american society that, collectively, we jump to blame individuals, judging their disabilities, instead of than pushing the massive, multibillion dollar corporation to do better when *they* design the spaces, manage operations, and hold the power.
it’s not “faking” disability to acknowledge that, in its quest to maximize profits at the expense of the guest experience, disney management has put guests in position where of COURSE they will seek out a free option that will make a wdw vacation less physically and financially taxing.

disneyfied trolley problem:

you’re in park management on a whimsical trolley and *something goes horribly wrong*! do you run over 5 paying guests or pull the lever to run over one paying guest?

or do you wonder why you’ve designed an Activation™️ dependent on running over guests at all?
it’s not “faking” disability to acknowledge that, in its quest to maximize profits at the expense of the guest experience, disney management has put guests in position where of COURSE they will seek out a free option that will make a wdw vacation less physically and financially taxing.

yup! plus, paying out the ass for LLs you book in advance won’t work if, like many disabled folks, your accessibility needs can change *moment to moment*. things like blood sugar, mast cells, chronic fatigue, sensory processing… not stuff you can count on to book a $25 return window for (per person)

@lentesta.bsky.social please accept my humble rambling as an offering to the touring plans and/or disney dish gods.

may this thread and quoted thread within provide food for thought as bountiful as a 9 lb lemon (not-so-coincidentally an accessible, high-capacity attraction with a lengthy run time.)
perfect disability advocate x touring plans collab:

looking at correlations between das usage vs. loss of huge, people-eating attractions w/long run times (universe of energy, great movie ride, horizons, backlot tour) and/or pavilions where you could pace yourself (wonders of life, innoventions) /?
1) disney parks built a reputation as accessibility-friendly and therefore sees more disabled tourists;
2) disability rates have increased due to covid;
3) rise is das usage also correlates w/ disproportionate price hikes at disney parks across the board AND switch from free FastPass to paid access.

i really, really wish anyone writing about the das changes would a) correctly report that das does not allow you to skip lines, and b) actually consult someone familiar with disability justice so that the public can better understand the issues at play instead of exacerbating entrenched ablism.
Changes that Disney made to a popular program that lets qualifying disabled people skip long lines at its California and Florida theme parks are too restrictive, disabled fans contend in a federal lawsuit and shareholder proposal that seek to expand eligibility. https://to.pbs.org/4iIy54N

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.
