In the running for "Overreaction of the Year Award," CEO Brian Niccol has barricaded his office to avoid striking baristas getting anywhere near him.

No matter. We'll be waiting right out front when you're ready to talk, Brian!

I know very few people who think the cost of public transit is prohibitive.

It’s that public transit in the US is treated in most cities like the thing you slap on after the fact.

My hot take is that over the next 10 years, we're going to see more emphasis on and investment in the humanities at Ivy League and other fancy schools just as state schools and small privates continue to decimate and even eliminate the humanities.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

Are you using AI, as a professional? Check your insurance cover, because a lot of the big insurers are about to pull out of insuring it. Which means that if you let it write your stuff or control your operations, you are potentially personally liable for its errors...
“Insurers increasingly view AI models’ outputs as too unpredictable and opaque to insure, said Dennis Bertram, head of cyber insurance for Europe at Mosaic. “It’s too much of a black box.”

I keep saying this but it’s at least very interesting that many doctors didn’t think ADHD persisted into adulthood until you couldn’t buy Ritalin over the counter anymore and most people stopped smoking.
yeah tbh I’d really rather be on ADHD meds and NOT have to develop a two pack a day cigarette habit as someone who’s never smoked before just to function
I guess I can drink twelve coffees a day while chain smoking if you want me to do this in a socially acceptable manner, I just don't see how that's better for my physical or mental health than Vyvanse, y'know?

O, the validation!
Remember my big haircut a couple weeks ago? That was mainly because I was noticing (as I periodically do) that I was losing so much hair & I can't stand having hairs all around. I often notice this happening when it's fall and my hair has grown past my shoulders.

My dreams lately have been much more closely aligned with reality (people & things look like the actual people & things they're supposed to be) and I keep having these moments when I first wake up of not being totally sure if I'm thinking of a memory or a dream.
That part's a little disconcerting.

On my way to work today I saw an old bearded man standing at the corner of a big intersection holding signs about "release the files."
He was completely by himself, demonstrating right in front of rush hour traffic.

118 billion people have lived and died on this planet. In the time it takes me to type and post this, another 6 will go. It isn’t necessary to feel feelings for all of them, or to extend sympathy or empathy to people facing the direct consequences of their career involvement in a violent cult.

It's not necessary to agree with her, like her, trust her or invite her to our table. But our "tent" aught to at least be large enough to acknowledge the real danger she is in.🤷🏻‍♀️
