People said it would be a long time before AI took any jobs but judging by the latest Grok update Kara Swisher will be out of work very soon

@dsquareddigest.bsky.social reminds me of your Unaccountability Machine
It is becoming increasingly unpleasant to be the customer of a giant corporation in the United States.

Every new technology seems to be used to further protect corporations from the rage of their customers, thus allowing the management to care less.

Book that Mark Zuckerberg and Meta sought to suppress is an immediate number one best seller.

Careless People is an exposé of the internal culture at the Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads parent by former Meta director by Sarah Wynn-Williams
Meta didn't want people to read this book. Now it's a No. 1 bestseller.
Meta tried to prevent the author from promoting her book. It backfired.

this is what derisking private infrastructure looks like:

creditors assume they're lending to the sovereign,
financier owners siphon as much as possible out,
we get shit in the rivers.

I've already read it and agree with essentially all of it. They also point out that the central thesis of the book is actually "we can do this, but we should do it slowly and carefully so we don't screw up, and it will probably take centuries and not look like sci-fi but more like Antarctica"

This so frustrates me. The first priority of a University should be the students. It is my priority. But they remained grossly silent with Trump's bigoted attacks on the students. Only when their funding was affected did they say anything.
This whole thread - but also, and despite my own deep cynicism, I have still been surprised by all the powerful institutions complying in advance. My uni is striking all mentions of diversity. The last 18mos has shown admins are generally unwilling to stand for academic freedom with their faculty.
Instead of "don't cut our funding," our message should be: hands off higher ed.

You want to restrict what professors can say in the classroom? Hands off.

You want to ban diversity offices? Hands off.

You want to cut our research funding? Hands off.

Hands. Off. Higher. Ed.

Meta illegaly downloaded 80+ terabytes of books from LibGen, Anna's Archive, and Z-library to train their AI models.

In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.

My fellow Americans, I have plan to restore this proud country to its former greatness: I'm gonna ask ChatGPT for some ideas on how to make things more efficient, and just, like, better, you know? I have a Pro account, by the way. Yeah, it's like $200 a month, but fixing America is worth that to me.
