Morality is like the rules of a game we’re all playing together.

The rules tell us what counts as fair play and what’s out of bounds.

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world.

This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵

Happy New Year, my dear friends and fellow humans!

As the year turns, may we care for one another, seek truth over propaganda, and think beyond our egos. May we act for justice, compassion, and the future our children will inherit. Humanity thrives only when we rise together. Happy New Year. 💛

I've made a habit of reading A Christmas Carol every Christmas Eve and I recommend the experience. You can get through it v quickly and it's such a good parable against the creeping temptation of insularity.

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.

One Life, Live It Well: watch our new animation narrated by Alice Roberts
'Life is like a piece of string. It has a beginning and an end. We don't get much say about that. But we can make choices about the bit in between. We have the freedom to shape our own lives.'

I treat worship of gods much the same way as I treat consumption of alcohol.

It can be comforting, and you should be entirely free to do it so long as you do it responsibly and don't hurt others. It's also an adult choice that should not be foisted on minors.

It's also important to remember that correlation over time can often be due to either to confounding variables, common causes, or mere coincidence, and does not automatically suggest causation.

Trying to imagine a world where 57-year-old Hillary Clinton drew a penis that looked like it maybe belonged to a barely-pubescent male in the birthday book of a prolific child molester and wrote a note referencing "a wonderful secret" on it

Every living thing in every place and time naturally prefers to exist and flourish rather than languish and die.

I can't think of any basis for morality that's more widely shared than that.
If we can all agree that consciousness is better than oblivion than everything else naturally flows from that.

Whatever maximizes consciousness in the universe is good.

And morality flows from that.

5 out of 5 AI agree 😉🤣

Why should we act morally if there's no objective moral law?
The reason seems quite simple and natural.
#morality #atheism #humanism
The ultimate reason is : for not to be miserable and lonely.

Without an objective moral law, there is still an incentive to be compassionate and helping and not murder or rape our neighbors.

If I kill someone, people will tend to avoid me, because they don't want to be hurt themselves.

Beautiful in its clarity and simplicity.
But we are social creatures. It's a necessity for our wellbeing to be in close contact with others.

To put it in a nutshell, commit crimes and you'll probably end up miserable.
