Not that an actual good snow after weeks of slush and ice isn't nice, but it always seems to be cloudy here when there's a big geomagnetic storm!

Or alternatively they happen when it's still not dark at night, that's also an option.

Damn.
4 days of seismic records from a seismic station in Jamaica shows Hurricane Melissa roaring towards the island.

Hurricanes increase the amplitude of ocean waves which beat on the coast and sea floor. These produce Rayleigh waves that can be seen as increasingly thick “wiggles” in seismic records 🧪

Thanks for featuring my paper! This was a first for me, it's cool that people are interested :)
Michelle's final paper takes us through BepiColombo's latest results on the magnetosphere of Mercury with data taken form 3 fly-bys over the nightside of the planet. Listen to learn more about the complex snap-backs and plasma flows of this little planet. 🔭 ☄️ arxiv.org/abs/2509.17872

Check out my new paper on arXiv!

We used data from IRF's ion sensor, MIPA, to compare Mercury's magnetosphere from BepiColombo's first three flybys. The second and third show evidence of an energetic process called bursty bulk flow that isn't seen in the first.

Spicy academic round 2: Every time the government talks about cutting things like NASA and NSF to save money so they can boost the economy, it's like they forget how much of that money goes to salaries. I have twice, while driving, gotten phone calls I was required to answer from NASA folks.

When flagship programs are underfunded by Congress, NASA & NSF have to find that money elsewhere, which means cutting programs that are paying the salaries of researchers and people supporting research.

Bottom line - stop calling it "cutting waste" when the gov't cuts science. It's mass layoffs.

The petition link is in the article - if you’re in the local DMV community you can sign for support!
The linked article notes that the union for Goddard Space Flight Center employees has asked for signatures on a petition requesting that this decision be reconsidered and the visitor center kept open: hyattsvillewire.com/2025/09/12/g...
