Hi! I’m Wendy and I’m an earthquake geologist and science communication specialist. I post about earthquakes, geology, cats, kids and comms.

According to BlueSky I’m a “delightful blend of scientific rigor and domestic chaos” 😁. 🧪⚒️
If you get so much online harassment why continue to do it?

This is why.

Good morning everyone. My 3D printed lidar-derived volcano tissue box covers are now for sale in my Etsy store. Majority are of Lawetlat'la (St Helens), Tahoma (Rainier), Wy'east (Hood), Kweq' Smanit (Baker), Kohm Yah-mah-nee (Lassen) and even one Salton Sea mud volcano. ⚒️

I should be able to exist on the internet without being insulted and harassed.

But he’s right on one count - that is what the block button is for. 🙃

Comments on my YouTube video have been awful lately - mean, sarcastic, degrading and just hateful. I wonder what —oh.

Pretty large aftershock of the earlier M7.6 just happened.

Between December 1 (12:00 AM PST) and December 7 (11:59 PM) there were 44 earthquakes in California of magnitude 2.0 or larger.

🔸40 earthquakes between magnitude 2.0 - 2.9

🔸4 earthquakes between magnitude 3.0 - 3.9

The largest earthquake was a magnitude 3.4 near Fortuna, CA.

Information on the magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Japan, including an animation showing the seismic waves as they were detected by seismometers across North America. 🧪

Are we having more earthquakes than usual? Not really.

On average there are 15-18 M7+ quakes every year and ~10x that many magnitude 6-6.9 earthquakes.

M 3.7 earthquake 4 km SE of San Ramon, CA. This is part of that ongoing earthquake swarm that started around Thanksgiving.

Did you feel it? Report it!

There are more than 100,000 earthquakes recorded in Japan every year. This is because Japan is situated on the boundary of 4 major tectonic plates.

The seismic waves from the M7.6 earthquake in Japan are rolling under us here in Northern California - far too small to feel but not too small to be detected by seismic instruments.

A year ago today a M7.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of Cape Mendocino, rattling residents and damaging homes.

This video gives a brief recap of that event. 🧪

Often on social media, when I post something related to my expertise, I'm immediately told, “But you forgot X!” ... as if a single post encompasses the contents of my entire brain + an encyclopedia to boot.

What’s your most constructive response? Genuinely asking, as I'd love to improve mine!

False Earthquake Alert Likely Triggered by ‘Something Out in the Field,’ USGS Says | KQED
The USGS, which said at least four seismic stations detected ground motion that signaled a quake, quickly canceled the warning that startled the Bay Area.

Seismic networks make (and log, permanently) many, many more detections than ever show up as located earthquakes.

They are triggered by:
Local noise.
Small, real earthquakes very cloae to 1 station.
Teleseismic distance earthquakes triggering every station near instantly.
Sensor errors.

Like thousands of people in Northern CA, I received the earthquake early warning false alert. While these alerts can be annoying, or even scary, false alerts can be useful. During the moments after the alert came in I was able to:

- Consider & take protective action like “drop, cover, hold on” 1/3
December 4, 2025 at 7:09 PM
I want to clarify a few points.
First, there was no earthquake or significant ground motion near Reno. Here is the recording from a seismic station nearby. The purple dot is the time that the false alert was issued. Nothing. No ground motion.

We are still waiting for information regarding what caused the false Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) alert that went out to CA and NV this morning.

While we’re waiting it’s worth mentioning that there is a trade-off between speed and accuracy and when it comes to earthquakes, seconds matter. 1/
There was an earthquake alert that went out this morning for a M5.9 near Reno, NV. This was a false alarm. There was no earthquake.

The USGS is working to identify the issue.

More soon.
