“A delightful blend of scientific rigor and domestic chaos.”
Same!! And I was lucky enough to go with a conservation biologist who works there

Following because I have nothing constructive to offer (but enough snark to share!)

I have not seen the data on the stations that triggered the alarm. Could be “noisy” stations but 🤷‍♀️

Finally, this is a good reminder that we live in earthquake country. Make sure you’re prepared - have an earthquake kit, practice drop, cover and hold on. Here are more ways to prepare for earthquakes. www.earthquakecountry.org/sevensteps/

Second, there is no earthquake expected. There is always the possibility that there could be an earthquake, but it’s no more likely today than at any other time.

False alarms are obviously a problem. They can create fear and anxiety, erode public trust, and cause confusion.

But IMHO the ongoing benefits of the EEW system far outweigh these types of rare misfires.

And today’s alert gave me an unexpected opportunity to practice drop, cover, and hold on!

EEW has other benefits as well.

EEW systems can trigger automated actions, including slowing down trains, closing water valves, opening firehouse doors, and starting back-up generators.

EEW has a really good success rate. Over the last few years it has alerted millions of people about potentially damaging shaking.

My kids got an early warning notification for the magnitude 5.2 in Julian earlier this year that allowed them to take protective action before the shaking arrived.

Earthquake early warning is an automated system that uses an algorithm to detect quakes and send out alerts far faster than a human could. Here’s how it works.

Earthquake Early Warning Basics
Earthquake early warning systems like ShakeAlert® work because an alert can be transmitted almost instantaneously, whereas the shaking waves from the earthquake travel through the shallow layers of th...

Yes - here is a video about that.

Nearby seismometers showed that there was no significant motion of the ground at the time the earthquake not notification went out.
