well this is concerning, given how protein powders are pushed these days
paris.nyc
my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

CR tests of 23 popular protein powders and shakes found that most contain high levels of lead.

Increasingly in favour of the Marie Kondo approach to collaborations in science. Does your collaborator spark joy? If not ➡️♻️🗑️

No one's skills or knowledge are so unique or indispensable that they get to make your day miserable with every interaction. 🧪🔭

I have reached the stage of JWST proposaling that involves zooming in on figures so much that I can identify the absolute heroes of astronomy who are still using SuperMongo and pgplot.

I understand why proposals with page limits use numbers, but I really dislike having skip back & forth to the references if I want to look one up. I don't care much about the ordering of the numbers though.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University & @upenn.edu have developed a new dual-imaging system that simultaneously maps retinal structure and capillary oxygen levels in live mice, offering a powerful tool to study vision-threatening diseases. 👁️🔬

Flocculent spirals, like NGC 2090, seen in this #NASAWebb image, are one of the more common types of spiral galaxies. They have patchy arms that seemingly blend together and disconnect in spots.

Credit: ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, A. Leroy. 🔭 🧪
A spiral galaxy. There is a fuzzy, blue-white spot at the center of the galaxy, which is a cluster of stars. Two, patchy orange arms composed of dust and gas spiral outward and wrap around the central region. Brighter orange patches dot the arms. The entire structure glows with a slight blue halo, which becomes more diffuse toward the edges of the image. There are many orange, white, and blue background galaxies spread throughout.

Michi Benthaus is btw also a Young Graduate Trainee with the European Space Agency!
Nifty. Hans Koenigsmann of SpaceX fame will fly on Blue Origin’s New Shepard to accompany a young woman, Michi Benthaus, a wheelchair user (due to a mountain biking accident in 2018) who will become the first wheelchair user to make it to space. “As early as next month.”

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap
HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "I'm willing to pay more for quality products if they are made in America, by Americans, who are paid a decent income." The tweet shows Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" painting, which is often used to show the tweeter is expressing a brave opinion. HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "MINIMUM WAGE JOBS WERE NOT MEANT TO BE A CAREER. Why does no one understand this? Entry level jobs are STEPPING STONES to better jobs. No one wants to work towards that though." HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "Buy $5 gloves instead of $50 ones. Trust me." The tweet shows a box of "Gorilla Grip" gloves. The label on Gorilla Grip gloves show they're made in China.

When Cynthia Nixon ran for governor her bagel order was a city-wide scandal for WEEKS

They called it her Howard Dean scream.

The effort put into understanding 3I/Atlas has been spectacular, imaginative, professional and well-organized. Planetary scientists don't need Avi Loeb put in charge of an international directorate to tell them how to do their jobs.

The performance of Concierto de Aranjuez by Rafael Aguirre with the Baltimore Symphony is incredible. Playing again at the Strathmore on Saturday evening, and back in #Baltimore on Sunday afternoon. Don't miss it! 🎶 my.bsomusic.org/overview/19594

I know how to search the literature but ... I start with looking for papers on PAH features at redshift 1, an hour later I'm deep into auroras on Neptune. Someone please lock me in a room with a pen, paper, no devices, and a grown-up who knows about the damn PAH features?! 🔭🧪

Reading this thread and thinking how incredibly useful it is to be able to sit down and have a smart grown up tell me what I need to know about a topic I'm interested in. I know a PhD is supposed to prep us for this, but it's hard. 🧪🔭

First day of classes at @jhuartssciences.bsky.social. A glorious day to learn #QuantumMechanics!

I'm teaching two courses - QM for physics majors, and Philosophy of Cosmology for a general audience. I'm going to try to maintain a thread saying what happens in each class, let's see how I do.

Incredible that we can spot such a tiny asteroid (1-3 meters!) as it whizzes past us. 🔭🚀

Asteroid 2025 TF flew over Antarctica at 00:47:26 UTC ± 18 s on 1 October, coming as close as 428 ± 7 km to Earth’s surface.

This is a similar altitude to the orbit of the International Space Station, and one of the closest approaches ever recorded.
