Bahahahahahha of course. Of fucking course. Thoughtless cretins sending us all to hell.
A study by Dayforce shows 87% of executives use AI for work, compared to 57% of managers and just 27% of employees.

I think this explains the massive disconnect we see in how CEOs talk about AI versus everyone else. It also raises the question of how useful it truly is for frontline work?
Execs are embracing AI more than their employees are, new research suggests
Research from HR software company Dayforce suggests that executives are leaning into AI far more than their employees.

begging people to learn to separate “i like it” with “it’s good.”

i like some things that are objectively crap. you can admit that you do too. it’s fine

I think it's the essential quality of a 'good design'. But ease of learning is predicated on clarity of focus.

A good design draws your attention to what you're supposed to know and ideally how to acquire that knowledge.

If players don't know what they're supposed to know, the design is flawed.
When evaluating whether or not a board game is "good," how much do you weigh "ease of learning how to play it"?

On hour 2 of Earthborn Rangers and my great friend/guide through the game just realized we've been playing it wrong the entire time...

And... well... yeah. Can't really argue.

What *is* the conceptual overlap between Arcs and Twilight Imperium anyway?

The differences are easy to spot, but the similarities seem far more difficult to pin down.

Any suggestions?

I wish we had better language and more metaphors to talk about what we enjoyed in a game than simply 'naming our favourite mechanism'.
November 26, 2025 at 5:35 PM
FYI, when you play a game, that you didn't really enjoy, but can't stop thinking about it afterwards: that's called Arcs syndrome.

2. It's rare for any creative, including writers, to be able to live solely off their creative income. Moreover, there is no correlation between the creative value of art and the income status of its creator. It's okay to have another gig to eat and pay bills and survive our capitalist hellscape.

Unsettling Catan by J. Rey Lee isn't a book just about Catan, but about eurogames and their characteristic features.

This is me trying to talk about its most pertinent arguments.

“Unsettling Catan: Detached Design in Eurogames” by J. Rey Lee
There are more than a few books about Catan out there. You can even find a couple of novels in the endless catalogue of ISBN lists. But in “Unsettling Catan” author J. Rey Lee doesn’t simply retrace his personal journey into the many-coloured world of modern board games. He also doesn’t give us a history of Catan’s development and success story, which – as some would argue – was the launch of the eurogame genre.

In a twist, I did not see coming, reading Unsettling Catan has made me genuinely want to play Arcs again.

Namely, to examine what the seemingly polar opposite of detached design feels like, when intentionally approached this way.

Game critiques are paratexts and I think we don't talk enough about the responsibility this puts on critics writing them.

I've only just started reading Unsettling Catan by @jreylee.bsky.social but the introduction already includes bangers like this one.

While also bringing up player *complicity*. I can't wait to get through more of its pages.

I did not dislike Bohemians.

I did dislike the German rulebook.

We often play together to be mean to each other. The "why" we come up with for doing so is worth talking about.
The crucible of competitive games
Any given competitive game can be seen as a test of individual morality. Not in the simplistic, binary sense of doing the „right“ thing and not the „wrong“ thing. Instead they challenge us to do something we know is wrong. If our upbringing hasn’t led us astray entirely, we not only have an interest in not harming others, but also to spare them inconveniences.

This might have been the Ghibli film I've enjoyed the most.

Very entertaining.
Watching Porco Rosso for the first time.

An unexpectedly cool Ghibli movie, it seems. 😀

To depict something means to reconstruct it in a different medium. Doing so means incorporating the limitations and characteristics of that medium.

It follows that all depiction is a distorted reconstruction within a medium. The way a movie distorts reality through editing. (1/3)
