Würde man den Satz ähnlich befürworten, wenn es um Film, Musik oder Theater geht?
georgiosp.bsky.social
I think something very similar is true for rules and game design.

Surprisingly only twice. But that was after we had already left.
georgiosp.bsky.social
Despite their best efforts, no.

"...in real life, taxation and redistribution of wealth is encouraged as a fun and healthy activity for all."

Amazing! 👏🏻

"As with capitalism itself, Tax the Rich is a "must-follow" game."

I LOL'ed.

This seems a fantastic game, but I don't have the right group to play and enjoy it with.

Every time I come back to Archipelago, the game feels more nuanced and full of social commentary than I remember.

And while there are some major missteps (namely the icons for rebels and natives), there are just many facets that are more and on point that most other games of that time.

How come Harmony of Dissonance has a less thorough walkthrough than Circle of the Moon?

I was under the impression it was considered the superiour entry?

It cannot be made clearer.

If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

TIL that I apparently judge people by the company they keep and the one they avoid.

Is there a meaningful difference between depicting events/groups in a #boardgame and referencing them in a card/illustration?

Or are the two effectively interchangeable?
georgiosp.bsky.social
I was trying to say that interpretation is part of play, in the same sense that rolling dice, playing cards, counting victory points, etc is.

Evaluating (and implicitly interpreting) our experience is what I would consider part of a critique.
georgiosp.bsky.social
I'm not entirely sure what you mean here.
georgiosp.bsky.social
Hmm. Aside from ignoring the premise of the question, that seems a bit of a non-answer.
georgiosp.bsky.social
Yeah, I can see that. Things can get a little fuzzy, though, once we move from the game towards talking about the historical background of the theme, the game's inclusions and omissions, etc.

I'd say it's still a review, if you can show how it meaningfully affects the experience.
georgiosp.bsky.social
So it's only a review if it's done for free. If you want to make a living (or any income with it), you're generating content.
georgiosp.bsky.social
Also interesting. Can you talk more about what falls under the umbrella of "product" for you?
georgiosp.bsky.social
Oh, that's interesting. Would you say interpretation is part of review and criticism?

Because I see it as part of play.
georgiosp.bsky.social
When does a review cease to be a review?

Ignoring any external factors like where it is published, if the critic was paid and by whom....

At what point does a critique no longer register and/or qualify as one?

"You need to play this game five times to know what you're doing" and "I played it once and got everything I can out of it" are not two comparable opposites when talking about #boardgames.

Mindlessly scrolling earlier, I saw a video which contained the sentence "all culture war is a deliberate distraction from class war". Possibly the most succinct expression of the times we live in, and the problems we're facing.

I think it may feel arbitrary because the objectives you score shape a lot of your strategy, making typical civ-progression rare.

Also, the board state can seem quite opaque if you're unfamiliar with the game. Unless you know what to look for, you don't know how well anybody else is doing.

Last night's game night reminded me that Civilization A New Dawn is a severely underrated introduction to the genre.

Macro-style viewpoint coupled with quick turns and a very transparent objective structure.

There are many paths players can take from here, but A New Dawn is a great place to start.
