For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Abolish DHS, too 👇
DHS employees entered our store this afternoon and served us a Notice of Inspection, demanding copies of I9 forms for each employee.

In 27 years as shopkeepers, we have never been subjected to this type of investigation.

ICE isn’t making rare mistakes. This is the point.

When an agency can grab people first and sort out rights later, if they bother at all, everyone is at risk. Citizen or not.

Among the many powerful lessons of the last week has been this: the people, not the politicians—and definitely not the Democrats—are leading in this moment. In this week’s Elie v. US, @elienyc.bsky.social explores why that’s both inspiring—and depressing.

In this week's Elie V. US, our justice correspondent explores the fecklessness of the Democratic Party, MAGA racism, and fighting despite unwinnable odds.

Banking on transphobia, disdain for the unhoused, and being soft on billionaires are one set of cynical gambits. Walking back his rhetoric about ICE in this particular moment is a whole other level of not just morally but strategically vacuous.

So I shared this thread on the 100th anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 & I'll share again because I think it is important for folks to know what it is the Trump admin has to undo to undo our US citizenship in order to set a precedent for challenging birthright citizenship.
Forgot to share here but to help put this into perspective, my great grandma was 9 years old when ALL Native Americans gained US citizenship on June 2, 1924 with the Indian Citizenship Act.

While it's convienent to point to white Southern vigilantes to explain the defeat of Reconstruction, as Proctor notes, it was white Northerners & federal officials who abandoned the rule of law & helped initiate a *nationwide* regime of racial repression.
In the same way that the media and elites in 2016 and 2024 acquiesced to Trump's election and re-election, it was white moderates, especially in the Republican Party, who doomed the South to Jim Crow after decades of insurgent violence and conservative legislative disfranchisement

Tressie McMillan Cottom has talked about part of the reason the right has targeted certain sectors/industries, is punishing Black women for radicalizing white women, and I think there’s a freight train full of truth in that.
A big part of why the Right is furious at White women right now is because they're increasingly using their Whiteness as shield and a weapon and it's honestly fucking great.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

It’s been reported locally, but I’m not sure how much national notice this has gotten. As part of this invasion by shithead goons, they are putting ICE agents in jetbridges and other parts of the airport at Minneapolis-Saint Paul. If you are flying Delta via MSP, you are putting yourself at risk.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will begin checking documents of travelers and workers at MSP airport, with patrols inside jet bridges.

They've caused serious burns, severed hands, and even killed.

how do you release a video statement like the one @governorwalz.mn.gov just put out and then have your state troopers assisting the very occupation you've called to end
Heard some flashbangs on the side we are not on; can't tell you RN what's happening over there. Over here, state troopers still standing side by side with the feds. Have seen a few MPD officers wander through.

before I go to bed, I feel obliged to emphasize how tonight’s rampage in northern Minneapolis was, by no exaggeration, a glorified episode of klan night riding by federally deputized groypers. Yes, DHS always had these people but the difference now is that they’re in charge and with a $175B budget.

This is the dirty secret of the Dems - they know the cops are completely out of their control and they try to stop the cops from threatening their lives by shoveling money at them and letting them do whatever they want.
I think the reason we have not seen Frey, Her, and Walz change their orientations on exercising the use of state policing power to repel the federal occupation is that to do so would be to admit the State Patrol, National Guard, MPD, SPPD, et al., are de facto not actually under their command.
