Editing audio tape with a razor blade.

I used to work for NPR as an audio engineer in the era of audio tape. Razor blades all over the floor...finding just the start of the word..making sure the cut was diagonal to avoid a pop or hit when the splice passed the tape head...yeah
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

When I was a security guard 40+ years ago, a number of posts had manual elevators. I got very good at getting the elevator to line up perfectly with the floor at which I wanted to exist.

Movie you’ve watched more than six times with a gif. Hard mode: no Stars (Wars nor Trek), LOTR, or Marvel.

(Extra note - Most of those 6 times were in one summer. That was a strange summer.)

So I loved the Civ series in the past, but I'd heard terrible things about Civ 7, so I held off on getting it. I figured I'd give them a few months to get beat up, and buy it around now. I hoped they'd have filed the rough edges off of it by now.

Man, was I wrong. This game is a hot mess.

Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

This is disappointing, but I'd rather know than not - ICEBlock is likely full of false positives, and not actually helping that much.

I find myself thinking about the overlap of the "do your own research" folks and GenAI addiction. I feel like people inclined to not trust experts are ripe for GenAI capture/addiction. Since the GenAI isn't a person, any competitiveness about the "expert" acting "better" than you vanishes.
