a depressing reality
Watched this while thing to see if I was in the clip. The one time I’ve ever been in the news was because cars kept hitting my house but it turns out there’s enough other news stories about cars hitting houses they didn’t need me.

I live near the bottom of a "hill". 2 streets converge at the top in an L-shaped intersection. Once, a truck sped up it and went airborne over *multiple* homes, crashing sideways mere feet away from people on a patio on the other side of the hill, and the driver hopped out and escaped on foot.

Rural America is in shambles. And cars have played a large role in this.

Basic shopping needs are often not met anymore, you must drive to your nearest walmart. Main street is dead.

It's hard to declare a war on something that lost everything decades ago we're here for ya when this becomes obvious
Taking away our cars can, should, and will be treated as a declaration of war upon rural America.
I find "America isn't really set up for it" to be an annoying rebuttal to any sort of proposal to reduce car dependency. Our leaders used policy to create a system of car dependency and we can sure as hell use policy to undo that. There are absolutely barriers, but do nothing is not a solution.

I want to add that I also think internet access, clothing, and anything else that either inherently or through societal need should have universal access.

I don't know how you participate in this world without technology and you're at a giant disadvantage without it.

Our needs evolve.
Universal access to healthcare, education, transportation, food, water & a bunch of other important stuff.

I want a government that works for the people not against.
It seems this also strands parents who can't drive. Universal education should include transportation.

we need bollards on every sidewalk
For no discernible reason whatsoever, this driver decided to pull off the road to drive on the sidewalk in front of the Centre Slush Puppie in Gatineau. She didn't stop to let someone out (not that doing so would make it okay) or anything. And we're supposed to Share The Road with these people?

My personal candidate for the worst one. The city eventually put up protective fencing along the edge.

I'm in the mood to see modern sidewalk abominations so if you could kindly share yours here that would please and disturb me.
Yes, the city needs to actually repave streets. Yes, the city needs to repair sidewalks. Yes, the city needs to install curb ramps.

But the bigger problem is that when LA decides to do anything at all to "help" pedestrians, the result looks like this complete and utter bullshit

Renting a Wombi e-bike for a month or two for funsies and I did a stress test with a big Costco run!

The people who say “but how will I get my groceries without an SUV???” have zero imagination.

Yes, also on bluesky the feeds are the algorithm, so join cool ones like Urbanism+ ⬇️

bsky.app/profile/did:...
While this website’s lack of algorithm can be boring, I will happily take it over the Threads algo that shows me some variation of “Agree or disagree: people over 65 with paid-off houses should not have to pay property taxes!” post literally every time I open the app.

Judging by what the military analysts in my feed are saying about battleships, it will sink the instant it's in conflict with an army that can shoot back either way.

Over the weekend my best friend (who is a huge transit nerd) learned about the word "Bustituted", which is when a trolley line is replaced with a bus. I can't stop thinking about it. Good word, transit nerds.
