I love this - Canadians have always known where we come from and what made us but we rarely say it so loudly and proudly.

Built in a place where we know we’re accepted just the way we are and the sky is the limit to our dreams, it’s no wonder that Canada has so many heroes.

Please do this survey and share with Indigenous communities as much as possible
I did this, took like 30 min.
Points I kept hammering: domestic cloud, regulations around copyright and likeness rights, focusing on machine learning with concrete, real world uses (creating new drugs, etc), the damage done by slop, the need to listen to AI experts who are realists, not boosters.
Canadians: The federal government is seeking public input on how AI should be developed and used in business, research, and the military.

If this scares the shit out of you, please let them know:

The fight about the BC ostrich farm is not really about the ostriches. It’s about far more important things than that. www.thestar.com/opinion/star...
Bruce Arthur: The B.C. ostrich affair is not about the birds
This isn’t really about the ostriches, but rather it's about basic biosecurity in the age of viruses, and whether a government can make and enforce laws and policy.

The ostriches are not the issue. Bad actors who wish to undermine the Canadian government and the health of its people are. The cull must proceed to safeguard Canada's national security.

Went on @60minutes.bsky.social to talk to Bill Whitaker about H5N1. As Kamran Khan from Bluedot told Bill, we don’t know if or when this virus might acquire pandemic capabilities, but it can.

And if it does, as I told Bill, that will be worse than COVID. Much worse.

Bird flu, feared as a possible pandemic, poses growing risk to people as pathogen spreads, scientists warn
More than 100 federal scientists who track bird flu, including vaccine and food safety experts, have been laid off. This comes as the deadly pathogen rips through dairy herds and poultry flocks.

Update

The City of Victoria will no longer use X/Twitter as of 12 August 2025.

Following a motion from Councillor Thompson, the city moved away from X, and now uses this one and Threads for weather alerts, updates, and emergency comms.

VicAlert remains preferred source for emerg communications.

Good for you Dr Rasmussen 💪
This is a very thoughtful thread about communicating about science on social media.

The hellsite algorithm throttles most of my tweets. Despite my follower count. But when I subtweet Ebright with a big red RETRACT image such as he's made for my papers, I still do numbers. Why is that?
