There's no reason Los Angeles County can't have 26 million people, like Seoul.

The “real poverty line” is that there is no upper bound to utility, and policy should be focused on making everyone hedonically better off, while helping the least fortunate keep up, and if you want to do that last part (as you should), you need a meaningful definition of “the least fortunate”

I’d be very skeptical of an authoritarian regime’s assertion that it’s necessary to move their capital out of the country’s largest city, especially since they’re planning to move it to a desert coast far from the country’s historic capitals. A dictatorship story more than a climate story.

So yes, this is a “beginning of the end” thing for me and simple stuff like, for example, having a bank account. Now is a good time to fight this issue and do so very publicly — it’s a matter of financial life or death for me

Not to bring everything back to my pet issue but one of the ways you make it less likely that teenagers are going to depend on older men for money is that you build more housing in major metros where the service jobs are

maybe an eccentric take, but I think this kind of parochialism—“SF is me and the 50 people I recognize”—would disappear if everyone learned, and understood the weight of, the population of various places. an hour of public comment is 30 commenters, which is 0.003% of San Francisco.
the worst part of this is whenever there’s the odd issue that actually draws hundreds of commenters, one of the regulars will claim that the people who don’t usually show up must be paid shills, because the regulars have never seen them before

I understand why it’s more complicated when men do it about women, but i still think “actually we should just never talk publicly about which celebrities we’re attracted to” is a terrible idea for a norm
