Aww, WeRateDogs turned 13 :)
WeRateDogs turns 10 years old today! A very silly idea to numerically objectify dogs has become one of the kindest and most powerful online communities ever. Thank you for joining us over the last decade. I never knew what this could be until you all showed me. Here's to many more good dogs ❤️

Ooh, the first edition of "Century of the Typewriter" by Wilfred Beeching (1974) is on archive.org! Probably still in copyright in the UK, but Beeching died in 2000 and I *urgently* need to read more about Italian hydraulic typewriters of the Mussolini era than is in my abridged 1990s edition ...

(ULP is "Unfair Labor Practices". Don't cross the picket line.)
As of this morning, Starbucks workers across the country are officially ON STRIKE. And we're prepared for this to become the biggest and longest ULP strike in Starbucks history.

Say #NoContractNoCoffee with us: DON'T BUY STARBUCKS for the duration of our open-ended ULP strike! $SBUX

New England looks like it will be partly cloudy tonight but given how last night looked it's worth popping your head out anyway (and give it a chance with your phone even if you don't see anything naked-eye.)
If all the aurora photos are giving you unbearable FOMO, it may please you to know that there’s a possibility for more lights tonight (Wed. 12 Nov), possibly right after sunset in North America. We’ll see how this next CME (coronal mass ejection) impact plays out!

crazy how much this bugs me now that someone pointed it out. if i worked at the white house, i would find this ugly, but not as annoying as i do now. ignorance is really bliss bc they more you learn, the more you just walk around thinking "collar gap" and "kerning is off."

(this thread inspired me to actually go out and look up. saw some pink to the west, naked-eye, but needed the camera to get the shots to the north)
You can SORT OF see the aurora from Beacon Hill right now.

Innovations in coffee: there's an (experimental?) drive-up coffee truck in southern NH that uses a phone app and "geofencing" to have your coffee ready when you arrive www.pingthru.com/faqs . They do seem to get how creepy that seems: "We also do not use facial recognition or scrape license plates."

Dear Physicists and Physics fans,

I would like to encourage you to celebrate #WomenInPhysics Day this Friday, November 7th.

Why November 7th? Because it is the birthday of two of the most impactful women physicists of the 1900's: Marie Curie and Lise Meitner. 🎢 ⚛️ 🧪 👩‍🔬

Worth a look (the additional filtering was unannounced *and* bsky probably actively hid some of the better Dick Cheney comments from you...)
Wondering why no one likes your posts anymore, even among your friends? It's because @jay.bsky.team and team have decided to hide a huge amount of content from all of our feeds by default.

Here's how to turn it off.

First go to the hamburger menu in the upper left corner

In grade 5 we had a guest speaker about safety and staying away from construction sites

He 'warned' us "I'll tell you a secret, bulldozers are really easy to start"

A whole room full of bored 11 year olds suddenly perked up, all thinking "Oh, realllllly?"

www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-Qc... it's primarily just the contagious excitement - but basically, this is "using an Engine Rich Exhaust rocket as an airbrush" and it's a hundred-year-old industrial process, refined a lot (the most modern version involves robots.) Very fun.
