Now it's the Danes who face the demand for danegeld. As Kipling points out (1/n),

"It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say:–
'We invaded you last night–we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away.'

In Franklin's tower there hangs a bell
It can ring, turn night to day
It can ring like fire when you lose your way. . . .

“Look what you made me do.” Also the rationalization of all abusers.
The “if she had complied, she’d still be alive” line that we’re hearing from ICE defenders is the mantra of apologists for security forces in dictatorships through the ages.

Bracing thread. 🧵
I wonder what any of you would do differently in your lives if I said "yes, America is at this moment a fascist nation."
Because I tell ya what, if I thought so, I'd be doing things differently. For starters, I wouldn't bother worrying about elections or candidates or whom to support. /1

My 4-year-old overheard me telling my sibling, “America’s in big trouble.” Later he said, “America needs to not break stuff and use its inside voice.” Chaos solved with preschool logic. Proud Dad here.

On January 6, 2021, newly elected representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) wrote: “Today is 1776.”

HRC's correction tonight: "In fact, it was not 1776 but 1861, the year insurrectionists who had tried to overthrow the government in order to establish minority rule tried to break the U.S."

Hey, @marcelias.bsky.social, thank you for your relentless protection of democracy. I wish you (and the country) many more successes in the new year!
Okay, we’re getting close to the new year here, so one last time this year:

Close your eyes for a quick moment and think about someone who brought you joy this year.

Now tell them.

Repost this and tell them if you want so more people do it, but you don’t have to.

I’ve seen a million media stories about how sad Republican voters in CA are about losing their Republican representatives.

But I don’t think I’ve seen a single one talking about Demoratic voters in Texas, or North Carolina, or Missouri losing their representatives.

"It appears that as we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, when British colonists ... took the radical step of rejecting ... all kings, and launched ... rule of law created by the people themselves, the American people are reclaiming that history."
