A short article of mine on civil-military relations and democratic backsliding had been accepted for publication in the journal "Connections".

Then I received an email that the editors can't publish the paper unless I "remove the case study/examples of the United States" (1/x)

The President is announcing more extrajudicial killings today.

A reminder that the administration has provided no limiting principles and these killings are completely untethered from the law (there was no "armed attack," there's no "armed conflict," and these aren't "unlawful combatants").

That's dangerously ignorant of the logic the Russians operate within. It invites further and more dangerous provocations as well as sabotage.

NATO SecGen: “We are so much stronger than the Russians that we don’t need to shoot down their planes when they enter our airspace. If we were weak, we might need to prove ourselves immediately. But if there's no threat, a measured response clearly signaling our displeasure is a much stronger move.”

Again, if the military of a Latin American country acted the way American cops act everyone would think what they were about to do ranged from "a mutiny" to "a coup d'etat"
notalawyer.bsky.social
the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

🚨Amazing:
🇳🇴 Norway’s drone detection system protecting Oslo Airport comes from 🇨🇳 Chinese company DJI Aeroscope, with system updates coming directly from DJI in China.

Unexpectedly that 🇨🇳 system was down for a full 19h from the evening of September 22nd, which is why the airport had to be closed.

🧵 I'm excited to share that my article "Democratic Backsliding and the Limits of Civilian Control of the Military" has been accepted @thejop.bsky.social.

It answers the question "how ought militaries act when civilian leaders turn on democratic institutions?"

Maduro & Machado seem to be engaged in a bidding war for the Trump admin's support with US companies' access to Venezuela's mineral wealth as the bargaining chip.

Will this lead to a "just and peaceful transition... to democracy" for the people of Venezuela?

www.nytimes.com/2025/10/10/w...
Venezuelan officials, hoping to end their country’s clash with the United States, offered the Trump administration a dominant stake in Venezuela’s oil and other mineral wealth in discussions that lasted for months, according to multiple people close to the talks. Under a deal discussed between a senior U.S. official and Mr. Maduro’s top aides, the Venezuelan strongman offered to open up all existing and future oil and gold projects to American companies, give preferential contracts to American businesses, reverse the flow of Venezuelan oil exports from China to the United States, and slash his country’s energy and mining contracts with Chinese, Iranian and Russian firms. As Mr. Grenell and Mr. Maduro’s envoys negotiated a deal, the leader of Venezuela’s main opposition movement, María Corina Machado, pitched her own economic proposal in New York. She argued that even greater economic wealth — $1.7 trillion in 15 years — awaited U.S. companies in Venezuela if her movement launched a political transition. (Ms. Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for what the Norwegian Nobel Committee described as “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.”)

Today in 1976, Gen. Paul Tibbets (USAF, ret.) re-enacted the bombing of Hiroshima he led on August 6, 1945, at an air show sponsored by the private Confederate Air Force in Harlingen, Texas. As Tibbets flew a B-29 overhead, conventional explosives were detonated on the ground to simulate the bomb.

Well, here's Nobel Peace Prize winner Machado welcoming the Trump administration's illegal military strikes against her Venezuelan compatriots as "legitimate pressure"

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado welcomed the US strike, describing it as legitimate pressure. She interpreted it as a direct attack on the government, which she said would be overthrown before long.
