OK, this is extremely cool. Comparable to the alligator bungie genitalia or the lid that keeps tarsiers' eyes in their head when they jump!

A paper in Scientific Reports shows that chameleons have evolved a longer, coiled optic nerve that is likely to provide “slack” to reduce tension on the optic nerve during the extensive rotations characteristic of the chameleon eye. go.nature.com/3JTSgQ1 #evosky 🧪

I remember a couple of days ago when the Police Commissioner said that getting a speeding ticket was "the dumbest thing [he'd] ever done"

And my immediate, cynical, and ultimately correct reaction was, "let's wait a few more days".

Well that was kinda cool, just saw two of the German A400M planes doing a low and close together pass over Nelson airport

If you looked up in certain parts of the country this week, you may have seen planes you didn't recognise.

I feel like "grift" is the one term that summarises most of what has happened the last 10, 15 years in the 'Western' world. It's all just suits running around contributing nothing, just assuming the underpaid nurses and supermarket staffers and teachers prop up the system by burning themselves out
"The Grift Bubble: A Political Theory of American Collapse"
"Those who work against the grifters... may be acting from love, or from law, because they know that these things are real. And so they should also know, in acting thus, that they are the patriots."

After some indoor roller skating (yay for polished concrete floors) I felt brave enough to try outdoors and it’s been a while since I’ve been so humbled

Very justified in making sure I had appropriate knee and elbow pads though

The irony here is that academics don’t just write the articles for free—we also referee and edit for them for free. Something is deeply broken.

“New Zealand's eight universities spent $30-million a year on journal licences and about half of that sum went to Elsevier.

HOLY SHIT. They found the genes for fibromyalgia - and it's *not* autoimmune, it's the central nervous system. It's very cool to see some progress made on the thing that's ruined my life since late teenage years!
Medical Republic: 'Fibromyalgia finally gets a genetic fingerprint'

'Additionally, certain risk loci overlapped with long covid (BPTF) and ME/CFS (OLFM4, RABGAP1L/GPR52), two poorly characterised disorders, albeit with different lead variants.'

“Of the sexual assaults reported across New Zealand in 2022 that had progressed to a court hearing, 41% were still waiting for an outcome after two years, up from 30% in 2018.”
It’s not just a few bad apples - the entire system is rotten. This status quo is being chosen - and misogyny is the choice.
The 932 day wait for High Court - is there another way to get justice for sexual assault victims?
'It was just a waiting game. I felt like I was lost in the system.'
