Introduction: A long-time hospital-based school psychologist and now a long-time academic. Fighting creeping cynicism by building or rebuilding the structures of research, evidence-based practices, and my life. Also, cooking, Canada, dog, hockey, Emerson, Marx (Groucho), fitness, and coffee.
Starting a double feature of Thanksgiving horror movies. “Murderous turkey” I’m in.

The best part of spatchcocking a chicken or turkey is that you get get to say “spatchcock.”

Academic colleagues are often frenemies, at best. I have never been close to most my colleagues. But—I am so grateful at how much my colleagues have stepped up and supported me in my recitation of personal woes. Many are now close friends. I won’t forget. Giving thanks to special people.

Wishing all people with challenging relatives a peaceful, warm, and calm holiday.

But prepare for battle if it comes to you.

No American Thanksgiving meal this year. But I will be making my favorite two pies in December: sweet potato pie and bourbon pecan pie.

Anybody who is like “Piracy is activism!”—trust me, supporting your local library is about 1000% more effective activism, and it’s still free for you and authors still get paid!

A reminder of attending faculty orientation when I joined McGill. "We work to ensure that all religious holidays can be observed by students and faculty. And, Dr. Shaw, American Thanksgiving is NOT a religious holiday." It was in good humor.

I am reading more novels than usual. Sick leave is so darned weird. I am inspired by Eden Robbins's "Remember that you will die." Not everything hits; but the creativity, audacity, voice, and skill of novel writing is incredible.

Wishing everyone safe travels ahead of American Thanksgiving. And when you get there and have to cope with difficult relatives--watch the best Thanksgiving movie together.

Not really a morning beer guy. But I like Maria Rainer singing Jim Morrison lyrics.

I manage all of this, a dialysis machine, a ventilator, tubes, a stressed out family, and more, but the government thinks we aren't professionals

I am still so puzzled that my employer (university) asks for donations a couple times per year. It is goofy enough that my alma mater asks for money--they already have all of my money. But these folks pay me for my work. Weird culture.

Conducted my first work-adjacent activity in a long time. An interview with CBC on the dramatic increase in school absences across Ontario and Quebec. 20 minutes from my office--manageable. Feels good to contribute a little.

Holiday-based slasher movies seem like good marketing. Enjoyed this one for Thanksgiving. Can't wait for Arbor Day: Return of the Axe; Canada Day: Run Mounties Run; and Generic Bank Holiday: Fear of the Free Time.

Ridiculously excited that there is new live HR and Bad Brains music being released.

Weird chemo thing: I lose much of my taste for a few days after treatment--and it is discouraging. Then it slowly returns. Imma drinking coffee everyday, so it is a good day when that wonderful taste comes back.

When you’re feeling fancy AF, but only have hamburger. Butter basted steak haché with bleu cheese and a port onion sauce.
