Jesse Jackson was the in-person target of Bill Clinton’s “Sista Souljah moment”, which served notice that the Democrats were moving right on race. After that, his activism took place on the margins of party politics where he was constantly derided as a “race hustler” and had very few defenders.
jesse jackson was constantly played as a punchline on 90s late-night TV to the point that i didn't understand his history of activism and serious left-leaning political platform until i was much older. i have to think, to some degree, that was on purpose.

hello and welcome to the political genius exam. here is question one. which is a more compelling message:

- the president is sending armies to occupy cities and kidnap and kill people and your town could be next
- a meal at the cheesecake factory that previously cost $100 now costs $104.9
Romance alert: Trump's reckless tariffs have Valentine’s Day costs up across the board:

Roses 🌹16.6%
Chocolates🍫 18.7%
Ribeye 🥩 25.4%
Restaurant meals 🍽️ 4.9%

The non-homicide death penalty was frequently used to condemn Black men accused of raping white women. The Supreme Court prohibited it in 2008, which means Ivey signed a facially unconstitutional law knowing it’ll be challenged so the Court can reconsider and maybe let them kill way more people.
As a child protection professional, I can tell you the death penalty is NOT an awesome solution to child sexual abuse. Most children are abused by family members; they will not report if their family members will die as a result.

May this one day happen to them.
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

It’s a simple formula: for each one of the 14 words we revise job growth down a percentage point.
Peter Navarro: "The jobs report comes out tomorrow. We have to revise our expectations down significantly for what a monthly job number should look like ... Wall Street has to adjust for the fact that we're deporting millions of illegals out of the job market."

Well, this is interesting!

The U.S. Attorney’s Office had a draft statement announcing Jeffrey Epstein’s “suicide” dated August 9, 2019.

He didn’t die until August 10.

Totally normal. Nothing to see here.
Epstein Files Reveal Prosecutors’ Announcement Dated Before His Death
The file dump includes multiple draft statements from federal prosecutors about the sex trafficker’s death, one of them dated the day before Epstein died.

Incredibly, this zero-sum logic isn’t in evidence when it comes time to enact a billionaire tax cut at everyone else’s expense.
Gonzales on Liam Ramos and his family: "They're not gonna qualify for asylum. So what do you do with all the people that go through the process and do not qualify for asylum? You deport them. I understand that 5-year-old and it breaks my heart. I also think, what about that 5-year-old US citizen?"

McMegan, Barro, and Douthat have made it their life’s work to channel and sell U.S. elite consensus. The downfall of that elite is against their collective interest, so they’re running PR for their masters. What’s telling is that they’re not even trying to deny the substantive allegations anymore.
This level of apologia (from Megan McArdle in a podcast with Josh Barro and Ross Douthat) is fucking appalling. Idk what else there is to say.

This is how my brain works after I lose an auction on eBay that I was winning until the last 30 seconds.
Mike Johnson on Trump calling for Rs to "nationalize" elections: "We had 3 Republicans who were ahead on election day in last cycle & every time a new tranche of ballots came in they just magically whittled away until their leads were lost. It looks on its face to be fraudulent. Can I prove it? No"

If the ICE murderers are ever charged and remove to federal court, the state prosecutor should cite Miller’s tweet in support of remand — unlike federal judges, Minnesota state court judges *are* elected.
This is the authoritarian tell:

If a judge rules against your preferred outcome, declare the judge illegitimate.

If that mindset takes hold, courts stop being guardrails and become targets.

Democracy cannot survive a government that believes the law only counts when it wins.

Sorry but if that happened to my dad I’d be trying to lead a country not called “Libya”, or even one starting with “L”; ain’t no shame in “leading” in a retail setting.

Leaving aside her obvious moral deficiencies, WTF does it even mean to “volunteer” to handle federal cases for the U.S. government and how is it a “job”? Maybe like signing up for a public defenders’ pool but have never heard of such a thing in this context.

8. Weiss's project is creating an Operation Paperclip for Epstein's cronies. Taking a group of discredited men and rehabilitating them as necessary pillars of system. Dershowitz and Peter Attia are the Wernher von Brauns of reactionary centrism.
