30 years ago to the day, in the evening 6 November 1995, a fire consumed pretty much the entire Rova (royal compound) of Antananarivo. Within a couple of hours, all the wooden palaces, the wooden interior of Manjakamiadana (the main palace), and the roof of the chapel were gone.

As a primatologist, Jane Goodall was a huge inspiration to me. I admired the way she describes chimpanzee behavior with such detail and empathy, and she’s inspired so many people and advocated for chimpanzee conservation and welfare.

However, I'm dismayed at what her narrative leaves out (1/10)

Net zero by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5°C. That may have been plausible 10 years ago, but the continued rise of emissions means that there is effectively no carbon budget left for 1.5. It is cumulative emissions that drives warming. 1/6 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Planting is not enough. 🌳

Among the key factors that determine the success of #restoration projects are:
✅ Clear land rights
✅ Genuine involvement of local communities.

This is the conclusion reached by the #D4R teams in the #SAVA region, based on a study of 7 sites.

🌱They are assessing the fauna, flora, soils and socio-economic impacts of reforestation to understand its successes and limitations.
👉In the long run, the objective is to develop a national restoration guide.
