Ok, I need to hear from the people. Has anyone gone for a sleep study and *not* been recommended a CPAP machine?

I have seen the same song and dance play out so many times in the last decade and half: the author's objection, always, is that society is rotten, and their "solution", always, is total societal reorganization, with even herculean political endeavors being presented as less than the bare minimum.

I think this opinion piece is quite emblematic of what we around these parts have come to call "Woke 1", i.e social justice practiced primarily as an extension of left-wing academic discourse, with all the issues and limitations that implies.

It's a relic of bygone age, unfit for the present moment
I find takes like this unsatisfying because they ignore the point of the Nazi analogy. It's not about denying America's history of racist terror. "Nazi" is not just code for "bad but in a way that specifically doesn't implicate US antecedents." www.bostonglobe.com/2026/01/26/o...
Don’t look to Germany for an analogy. The Minneapolis nightmare is uniquely American. - The Boston Globe
In order to defeat the white nationalism that is at the core of ICE’s assault on American democracy, we have to see it and treat it as what it is.

There has been an increasing sense in Minneapolis that we are on our own, that our elected representatives are unwilling and/or unable to take action to get these murderous Nazi thugs out of our community. I really hope that changes today. The time for pleading TV hits ended weeks ago.

Started watching The Pitt and it's such a good show but I couldn't even tell you why.

I've never even loved hospital dramas and it's just watching organized chaos for several hours, but somehow it's so compelling?

It's rare that I'm almost incapable of articulating why I like something.

We have a consultation problem. I write about a Toronto rec centre that will have taken 14 years to plan, cost at least three times the original budget - and be a bad building.

What is the cost of consultation?
Toronto recreation centre that started as $40-million project in 2016 has ballooned to nearly $113-million before construction even starts

If we had a halfway decent opposition party in Canada, they’d endorse the words Carney used today, and then hammer him relentlessly on implementation or lack thereof.

You can pry it from my cold, dead hands.

No exaggeration, I think Wikipedia is the greatest thing that's ever happened to humanity and I'd enlist in a war for it if I needed to.
wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

ICE keeps saying the people protesting it are being paid without any evidence, but we have receipts showing that the people *defending* ICE are absolutely being paid.

And yet we only hear lies about the former on cable news.
relevant to the debate over whether we should keep funding DHS without reforms and accountability for how out of control their spending is

This article includes so many mealy-mouthed "we could do this, but the economy!" opinions.

It's so disheartening how often we're reminded that responses to evil and injustice must consider international commerce above all else.

Public bathrooms are so important for accessibility and North American society's lack of them is a travesty.

Again, Mamdani hits it out of the park with low hanging fruit almost no one could argue against.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin on Saturday announced an initiative to install more public bathrooms across the city.

It's funny how Zohran's tactic appears to be showing up to things that are well-known problems and going "wait why haven't we fixed this yet"

Remember that scene in The West Wing about how the Mercator map projection is damaging to Africa/the global south because it deemphasizes how big they are while emphasizing places like Greenland?

I would bet everything I own that it's now hurting Greenland too. Trump wants it because it's big.

Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine.

We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.

It's interesting because there are obviously many issues in international law with Maduro's regime and his stolen election(s).

Which is why the legality argument many seem to be raising about this attack is almost laughable, despite being true. It's almost entirely irrelevant.
