Covers both Boston, where I was literally born, and a fictional version of the sort of town I actually lived in

Also means I will not be following along and finally understanding(?) all the Steelers-derived memes on my feed
Was looking forward (or “looking forward”) to watching Bears game with my dad only to find it’s not showing in this market because local CBS affiliate does not want to bother competing with the Packers and decided to show Friends reruns instead

Imagining Tony Judt meeting Paul Dooley’s character from Breaking Away
I always think of Tony Judt on this (though I'd hold the condescension and double down on the public university systems in the heartland)

Thinking of the Coffee 2 post in my parents’ cold house, as they have a good enough thermos for me to still be drinking Coffee 1 in the afternoon.

Arriving in Milwaukee, looking out my window, and seeing a guy jet skiing on the Menomonee River in 45F weather.

This is a great city.

I hope this email finds you so back, rather than so over

I used to be very good at low-grade slight masculine jerkiness and I need to get back in the swing of it.

The thing with the Hertzberger building is that you only get that image from black-and-white photos of it (possibly unfinished!)—that impression doesn’t come through at all on the actual building.

So much architectural discourse happened through bad photography and we’re all poorer for it.
This is a pretty good description of DC's Hirshhorn Museum building. (Even if it misspells the name.)

Hmm my impression at the time was that it had all the bad you could expect from a modern interpretation with none of the good of myth.

This may be Hellenic chauvinism but I think Yorgos is the only filmmaker who really “gets” myth and how it mixes the arbitrary with the absolutely necessary.
Watching Aronofsky's Noah, and why are we not all talking about this all of the time?

Ordered a cappuccino and gave my name as “[Jacques-Larry] from the North End” to distinguish myself from the other Alex here and what am I even doing (I am a Greek from the Merrimack Valley, not a Boston Italian).

Unintentional perfect timing to resuming rewatching the Woman Called Fujiko, which has both plots about stealing some French crown jewels and a global plutocratic child abuse conspiracy

lol actually just did something like this with a houseguest (The Name of the Rose and a book by R. Buckminster Fuller)
alright let’s get something more pleasant going. what two books would you leave out on your coffee table so a reporter can mention you have them. doesn’t matter if you’ve read them. for me it’s Pale Fire (which I did read) and Ulysses (got like 15% of the way in)

The real kicker in this is about his publisher.

Also “Mr. Ferrari’s readers include his co-workers” makes me think of Croupier, which is one of the all-time great chronically underseen movies and also about whole the “writer making a living at odd hours” dynamic.

Can't quite get my head around what it must have felt like for fans to have somehow against all odds succeeded in saving Star Trek for a third season and then you turn on Ep 3.1 and it's "Spock's Brain."

Also I love "Spock's Brain."

People aged differently in the past. This is what a 51 year-old looked like in 1985.
