The rewards for being clever are meager and cleverness is no guarantee you’ll be right either.

“I told her he wasn’t in a cave” legit makes me laugh every time.

The thing (based on my memory of being six) is while maintenance and some landscaping would be fun if you introduced actual *cleaning* into the roster the entire thing would fall apart

If kindergartners and first graders had the skills they’d do a decent chunk of the school’s maintenance and upkeep for fun

At least in LA I believe these are throttled at 18 mph—it’s can be very frustrating being on one since I can go faster on a regular bike so I’m basically using it as an elliptical

(though 18mph really is functionally the same speed as driving/biking for the types of trips I use these for)

Watching the special features and Michael Mann’s talking about how as a kid in Chicago he’d go around taking pictures of bridge. Dudes rock.

Great movie for tool use too (unfortunately couldn’t quickly find any screenshots of Jim Belushi physically hacking into the security system)
James Caan using a safecracking drill in the 1981 movie Thief James Caan and others using a thermal lance in the 1981 movie Thief Jim Belushi listening in on people operating an electronic security system in the 1981 movie Thief

Feel free to download and print in whatever way you like.
A screenshot of an Apple reunion poster, 1976-1984. This poster was created for an Apple reunion in 1994 of those workers who were at Apple in the first years. It shows four people in a somewhat deco style armed with parts of the Apple logo, mostly looking towards a bright sky future. A screenshot of Apple's classic Pascal poster, with a bright strangely colourful set of railroad diagrams showing the syntax of the pascal language. The top of the poster contains the 'pascal' text and an apple logo made of 3D stripes of the apple logo continuing through the motter tektura-like text of the word pascal. a quite old version of an apple personal computers logo, with the background black and a barely discernible grey square grid, with a giant colourful apple logo in the centre, and stripes of apple logo colours in green, yellow, orange, red, purple and a cyan blue. This poster differs from the original in that it uses a later more refined version of the Apple logo than the original poster. A screenshot of a french magazine and language apple double page spread turned into a poster. On the left is a small macintosh 128k, and on the right a macintosh II with monitor and full size AEK keyboard. In between are books labeled by mao tse tung, engels, lenin, marx and trotsky. The text above reads in french "Il était temps qu'un révolutionnaire..." and "soit aussia capable d'évoluer." - indicating that it's time a revolutionary was also capable of evolving.

I think this is everyone else’s response after I tell them to watch Tai Chi Master (which is goofy, flawed, but ultimately winningly earnest and come on, it’s Jet Li as Zhang Sanfeng)

Oddly my default answer here’s Everything Everywhere All At Once (it’s okay, not bad but not close to great either)

What's your pet "Mid genre movie that's fine but didn't deserve the raves"?

Mine's Crazy Rich Asians. Maybe unfair, because I read the book first and enjoyed that. But the film is just so oddly paced and characterless. It's watchable, but just for pretty faces, nice scenery, and Michelle Yeoh
stephenkb.bsky.social
My unfair opinion is that we all have genre blindspots which means that one breaks containment some people go mad for a mid movie.

Also the fact that things aren’t happening on his social network of choice. Bluesky is irrelevant, your place in the network hierarchy here gives you no power, and you develop the complexes of people who speaks loudly and don’t have any sticks.

Everyone in that subreddit was clearly miserable too, also see that everywhere online
dayuan.bsky.social
One thing I first noticed when reading in a car subreddit was how people weren’t even arguing from their own point of view or taste anymore: rather it was usually some version of “everyone,” “the market,” “a majority,” “most people,” etc. See that everywhere now

Probably the only way I think the 2024 election was personally liberating is that it finally forced me to admit “I don’t know shit” and “I don’t know the minds of my countrymen and frankly I don’t want to know”

Overhearing people talking about experiencing the broader cultural aftermath of 9/11 as kids in Orange and Riverside Counties CA vs. my experience in urban/inner suburban Chicago really driving this home
dayuan.bsky.social
It must be odd for the entire culture of the country to be so nationalized now—I’ve always thought I had a “normal” upbringing I’m realizing the default my childhood background culture was both way more liberal and Catholic than everywhere else

could we mod up with self-made armor, like Stephen Root in Buster Scruggs covered in pans, in pursuit of our quasi-Mohist strategy of peace even with the unruly?

why don’t the Simpsons use their “union nuclear technician who owns a house outright” wealth to address the root causes of crime instead of dressing up as the Bartman

“Homer Simpson earns enough to feed a family of five on a single income because (a) of unions (b) working class people earned so much more in the heyday of the 90s” etc
