Non-profit news organizations should really be operating under the assumption that their 501(c)(3) status could be yanked at any time. All it's going to take is one significant investigation or viral story before their attention turns that way.

Not long after the USSR ended, I heard a retired Soviet General interviewed. He was asked how the US would function without an external enemy. He said the Cold War programmed Americans to hate and without it they would turn on themselves because they don’t know how to not hate. He saw it.
