While there are things like this going on, Labour (and obviously Reform and the Tories) want to stop refugees coming to this country. www.irishtimes.com/world/africa...

60,000 is the *low end* estimate.
So, El Fasher looks like one of the worst single event atrocities to happen this century so far, but the evidence has come in such a trickle it seems to only now be getting verified

Re-posting with alt text because the post accompanying this is obviously wrong, it's clearly a picture of a woman on a Crosscountry train having found a place to sit on the floor and read, her coffee cup beside her, folks queuing for the loo behind her

Inspector Norse, Radiospread, Grittenham Clumps and John Thaw are among the names chosen for Oxfordshire’s gritters this winter. Oxfordshire County Council asked the public for “pun-tastic names” for its 30-strong fleet of gritting lorries.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

The proposals to limit Article 3 are absolutely terrifying. I struggle to think of something that has come out of any UK government which has concerned me more. This must be resisted absolutely.

All of this is fascism. And not early stage either. This is the embedding of the Right Wing Daily Mail press consensus as the absolutely unshakable common sense of the UK state. Made possible because the "left wing" party has abdicated any kind of moral position on it.
this is really grim

There's almost certainly trans women that have been in the WI longer than JKR has been alive and she has the audacity to "protect women" by preventing 80 year old women from making fucking jam with her friends

Up to episode six of season four of The Witcher and I can definitely see why Henry Cavill left. The writing has fallen off a cliff.

1. Some good news at last. This week’s column is about the amazing thing a couple of us stumbled into three years ago, which we’ve now developed into a global research programme. It doesn’t change everything, of course, but it could help change quite a lot. + 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Over a pint in Oxford, we may have stumbled upon the holy grail of agriculture | George Monbiot
I knew that a revolution in our understanding of soil could change the world. Then came a eureka moment – and the birth of the Earth Rover Program, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

People need to boycott this show and not just half ass. Shame everyone who plans on watching it. This isn't about Eurovision, it's about Israel getting away with committing genocide because THERE ARE NEVER ANY CONSEQUENCES. They should be untouchable by now. Everybody needs to walk the fucking walk.
Eurovision has allowed Israel to compete in 2026.

Ireland, Spain, Slovenia, and the Netherlands have pulled out of the competition following the decision.

I'm old enough to remember when you'd go into a restaurant and the first thing they'd say was "smoking or non" as if cigarette smoke would stay on one side of an enclosed space. The cultural shift on tobacco use over my lifetime is really remarkable and I don't think it could be replicated today.
it is MIRACULOUS that we got rid of lead paint and asbestos when we did. if we had tried that today, there would be people whining about how we're restricting their rights.
Bring back residential-use lead paint, you cowards.

I've posted about this before but one of the most memorable lessons I learned in grad school was about how IQ tests are not a very good indicator of overall intelligence because you can just train for the test - we did this by taking weekly IQ tests and getting better at it over time

I realize everyone knows this, but you'll note that what he saw was two survivors trying to flip a boat over.

Which is a thing literally fucking anyone in a shipwreck would do.

The other stuff he said was fanfic he made up about them.
Q: What did you see in the second strike?

Cotton: "I saw two survivors trying to flip a boat -- loaded with drugs, bound for the United States -- back over, so they could stay in the fight."
