A lot of young men voted for Trump because they thought he wouldn't do this sort of thing, and the middle class soured, probably forever, on so-called humanitarian intervention by the time Fallujah hit.
My read is this is probably a good political move, for now. Americans of the middle type love the idea of war but don't actually want to be in war. A lot is going to ride on what happens next but this will probably get away from them in odd ways, and quickly.
