I heard a story about a female academic giving a paper at the IHR who, after receiving a long and aggressive question from a senior male professor, simply leaned back with her hands behind her head and replied “Oh, do fuck off.”
One of my colleagues went to a seminar at Berkeley and when someone asked a question Derrida brushed it off saying ‘what you ask may be important but it is not interesting’.
This path leads to chaos.

Just a reminder to shop small this weekend. Visit your indie bookstore.

I get why the Beeb is concerned about doing this. They don't think the country has their backs. They don't think the government does. They may even have been told, quietly, that they won't get support from Downing Street.

None of that makes the situation any less emetic.

🏺 Two things have become clear in researching #Matriarcha:
1) direct evidence of how dangerous birth is – skeletons with stuck at-term babies inside them – goes back many millennia
2) humans/hominins have likely been obligate social birthers for about as long as they've been obligate tool users
Point of order: all human births are “natural.” Medical interventions in fertility are a fundamental part of the deep history of our species. Stop mom-shaming women who want and need medicine for being, um, human. Cheers!

This is disgraceful. Abortions are provided to stop further harm. A woman is a human and has every right to have an abortion for numerous reasons. It’s a heartbreaking choice, but sometimes it’s absolutely necessary. Women’s rights are as fundamental as men’s.
The US State Department classified state-funded abortion services, including NHS services, as 'human rights violations'. Make no mistake, this will embolden the UK's anti-choice Christian Nationalist movement, hell-bent on reversing women's rights. humanists.uk/2025/11/27/n...

Trump didnt like the way a historian described him on BBC as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” So Trump threatened to sue.
Now the BBC has overcorrected—the line has been cut.
Not great that they caved

Trump Angrily Threatened to Sue BBC. Then Things Took a Darker Turn.
First, British Broadcasting Corporation execs resigned after Trump complained about a segment. Now the BBC edited out a line from a historian that was critical of Trump. Where does this end?

I’m sorry but there is no leftist argument in favour of book piracy (even academic books: because in that case honestly a lot of academics will just send you the PDF if you ask, it might even be open access) while libraries exist. And using libraries is the way to keep them existing.

BBC fascist pandering. This is how the fascists get away with it. They bully and threaten. The only way to beat bullies is to stand up to them. The more they get their own way, the more they want it.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1
