What I did not know was that the original Betty in Wilson, Keppel and Betty quit to become a war reporter in 1941 and reported the Nuremberg trials. Now there is a novel in waiting.

There's an old Greek belief that if a baby is born on Christmas, they will turn into a Kallikantzaroi for taking attention away from Christ. Kallikantzaroi are hairy, red-eyed, cloven-hooved goblins that live underground and only emerge at Christmas to wreck havoc. #WyrdWednesday

I’ve posted this before but the light was perfect today- a little Victorian cat paw in a brick at the front of the old Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. As this is on the front-facing corner of the main gates, the bricklayer quite clearly put it there on purpose, at a height where children would spot it.

Watching old Christmas Gone Fishing on bbc2, Bob's just given Paul a vinyl recording of his mum singing and it absolutely captures why records still sell. There's something extraordinary about it, a weird connection that you just wouldn't get with a cd or MP3.

Sometimes learning things the relevance of which is not immediately apparent to you is Good, Actually? Because we are people in the world, not merely vehicles for producing capital?
This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.

I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

Home Office Ministers state publicly, on the record, that they are deliberately making life worse for older people and people with disabilities who depend on care services, but it's worth it because it reduces net migration.

Nobody cares what I think, but FWIW I consider ‘voting for/supporting Reform UK’ to be a hate crime. I don’t care about the ‘reasons’. Don’t claim ignorance. If you support them, you’re overlooking an awful lot of bad stuff. You’d have to be thick to the point of brain-injured to be that unaware.

Eventually AI wastes everybody's time. Now it's archivists and librarians.
Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.
I wish a notice like this wasn't necessary.

So I read the article, taking one for the team because I’m going to hell anyway. The academic (who is not an “obesity tsar”) said no such thing. He said that meals should be offered in a range of sizes, for smaller and larger people. He did not say that women should be obliged to eat less.
