Trump Gutted AIDS Health Care at the Worst Possible Time
By the first World AIDS Day of his second term, Trump gutted LGBTQ+ employment globally and put humanity at greater risk of AIDS.

The problem with fetishizing the rule of law is that people have to break the law to resist fascism, state violence, and oppression. This has always been true, and is very much the case RIGHT NOW.

Look around. The case for more, not less, liberal arts education - actual, real education in reading, writing, thinking, arguing, analyzing, & synthesizing by doing the actual hard work for which there is no substitute - is stronger than it’s ever been at any point in human history.

Honestly, when there is a reporter on the story with the expertise to say it, they can simply say it. Some things are just true. Like "FDA offical makes unprecedented claim, with no evidence, that Covid vaccines killed children." Nothing here needs an "experts say" to back it.
So it’s important not to posit false equivalence here: FDA says X, other experts say Y. This stages the story as a disagreement between experts. This is not the case. This entire year has been a sustained attack on vaccines. This is the story.

Even a decade ago I'd have far sooner predicted that the US would succumb to authoritarian rule than that it would become a state where vaccines were unavailable.

But if we don't throw RFK Jr. out on his ass, we're headed there fast.
RFK Jr. is overhauling the program that helps preserve Americans' access to vaccines
A Kennedy adviser said he wants to preserve the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. The health secretary's anti-vaccine allies prefer it collapse.

Hegseth commits war crimes all the livelong day, yes.

It's odd to watch Democrats express outrage over said war crimes when nearly all of them backed Biden providing unconditional support and unlimited military aid to the Israelis in their campaign of genocide against the Palestinian people.

"Never spread the lie in the headline" should be a hard rule of 21st century journalism.

Research shows that repeating lies helps to spread them, and people read headlines more than they read stories.
News media has to do better with headlines that present false and unverified public health claims.

Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

You just need control of the algorithm.

Today, social media platforms hold the sole power to study the effects of feed-ranking algorithms. We developed a platform-independent method that reranks participants’ feeds in real time and used thi...

This bleak (but unfortunately compelling) thread makes me think that the individual human mind/psyche is just ill-suited to being plugged into machines that allow everyone everywhere to be simultaneously talking about everything that has ever happened or could have happened at any time in any place.
This is not a "students today" post--it's more "this is a new form of dysfunction" that doesn't look exactly like it's been in previous decades. It's more than just "first-year chaos." It's an across-the-board inability to process instructions, engage with longer texts, and *connect* with others.

Ordering no quarter, as Hegseth effectively did, isn't a newfangled modern war crime. It was understood as a crime as far back as the Revolutionary War. Washington threatened to do reprisals over it. The bad guy in 'The Patriot' is (very loosely) based off a British officer who was notorious for it.

What's hilarious is that competent programmers, as well as people studying programming for the very first time, know that all code you write after about 4 hours is garbage. Totally useless, none of it worth salvaging.

Actual programmers hear "I coded for 36 hours" and hear "I gooned for 36 hours"

There was never really a point where horse usage reached anywhere near the saturation of car usage, so it's hard to compare. At the highest point there was about one horse for every five Americans. People just walked a lot!
Considering that horses are dangerous and riders are very regularly seriously injured, I wonder what the direct overall injury/death rate looked like when everyone in our society had to constantly ride/drive horses, versus the injury/death rate from cars today?
