American Coots are one of the regular water foul at my local park in the Pacific Northwest. They act like, and interact with, our local ducks, even though they’re a completely separate species. They’re recognizable by their comically big orange feet. So cute!
American coots (Fulica americana) have white outer undertail coverts, but usually they're inconspicuous. The coots display them when signaling, so maybe this one was trying to tell me something. Photo taken at the Rio Grande in Albuquerque on November 28, 2025.
