Statement on what I'm hearing on the doors about Gaza:
In this campaign, we have knocked on over 12,000 doors. These conversations are where my campaign priorities come from. I have heard from you about the need for an effective and compassionate response to homelessness, addressing climate change, and building a comprehensive public safety system. That is what is driving me. In these conversations, another issue has come up again and again. That issue is the genocide in Gaza. Ward 8 neighbor Zahra Gaal said, “It's important for me that Soren talks about Gaza because I need all candidates to support ending the genocide. I also believe that candidates should speak on our tax dollars that are funding and arming the IDF. I want all candidates, including local politicians, to take meaningful action to stop the genocide, support a ceasefire, and cut our tax dollars that are funding militaries/war.” As someone who has faced state-sanctioned violence, I can not be silent as the Israeli state, aided by the United States, commits genocide in Gaza. The war must come to an immediate end, and food and aid must be allowed unfettered access to Gaza. We here in Minneapolis have little control over what happens in Gaza, but we do have control over what we do. The City of Minneapolis contracts with a company called Zen City, which is an Israeli security company. We must end this contract and refrain from contracting with Israeli security companies. That is what Ward 8 neighbors are asking of me, and it is the right thing to do.

My attorney will be there on my behalf. But I do need to address one additional thing — in fact, I have to. The Mayor keeps repeating this line that people “want” encampments. That is not just wrong, it is offensive. Nobody wants to live in an encampment. Nobody wants to sleep in the cold, without water, surrounded by danger. And nobody wants to see their neighbors forced into that misery either. No One Wants Encampments — They Exist Because There Are No Options The only reason people live in encampments is because there is no available, safe, stable, low-barrier shelter. No Navigation Centers. No emergency hotel beds. No plan. Nothing. What Displacement Really Means And let me be clear about what displacement really means. Just yesterday, under the Mayor’s direction, MPD and Public Works cleared an encampment and threw away everything people had left in this world. Not just tents. Not just tarps. Personal belongings, keepsakes — including the ashes of a woman’s daughter. That’s not public safety. That’s not compassion. That is cruelty, plain and simple. It is a macabre Groundhog Day of destruction and demoralization that makes people even more vulnerable to the very violence this city claims to oppose. Community Must Fill the Void of Leadership I refuse to participate in that failure. Until there are real options rooted in care and dignity, displacement is not an answer. In the meantime, it falls to community to replace the void of leadership — to step up where the City will not, and to care for each other.

My statement on tonight's DFL Feminist Caucus Annual Meeting. This statement is being emailed to the Feminist Caucus Chair, Alicia Gibson, and to the State DFL Chair, Richard Carlbom.

This caucus should be ashamed of itself.
Tonight, I attended my first and last DFL Feminist Caucus meeting. As someone who did not come by my feminism through how I was raised, but rather fought my way through to live as the gender I am and to exist as a non-binary person in this world, I found the experience to be demeaning, demoralizing, and actively anti-feminist. If being a feminist in the DFL means caucusing with this group, count me out. My pronouns are very simple and yet the caucus chairs and caucus leadership could not get them correct, despite being repeatedly reminded and corrected at every single opportunity. However, they could suddenly use the singular “they” when it came to my fellow caucus member who happened to be a trans woman, despite her repeatedly giving her pronouns as she/her. This was just the beginning. It was clear from the start that no one leading this meeting understood Robert’s Rules, and very clearly wanted to vote for their friends and be done with it. At the very beginning, an illegal motion was made to just adopt an entire slate of leadership, despite there being challengers to those positions known to the caucus. For me, however, the most hurtful thing was that despite repeatedly affirming that underrepresented people should run for caucus office, should be prioritized in the process, no trans or non-binary people were represented in any of the caucus leadership, much less respected in the meeting. My pronouns - they/them - were clearly seen as an inconvenience, met with eyerolls and annoyance whenever I corrected people. At one point, one of the newly elected caucus leadership claimed her pronouns are “Black Queen,” a clear mockery of the process of asking for pronouns altogether. Does this reflect DFL values? To mock a non-binary person whose community is under direct attack from the president himself? To refuse to use a person’s proper pronouns so repeatedly and without care that I had to make a SIGN with them on it for the meeting? It wasn’t as though my pronouns were a surprise. I sent in my statement of intent to run for Vice Chair the day before the meeting and it was sent out to all members. I identified my pronouns in that statement. And yet, they were ignored. The DFL Feminist Caucus is anything but. I resign my membership.
