I've said it before but it's always worth repeating: pirating books makes a person a class traitor

The sham statement from the Trump WH is disgusting on so many levels, but -

I just keep thinking they KNOW their targets are going to get threatened, and they already know what happened to former Congresswoman Giffords.

Kudos to Kelly's statement. Let's make sure we're yelling about this too.
Sen. Mark Kelly has released a statement.

"If this is meant to intimidate me and other members of Congress from doing our jobs and holding this administration accountable, it won't work. I've given too much to this country to be silenced by bullies..."

If you're planning on shopping during black Friday or cyber Monday, why not consider supporting artists, writers, creators? Buy a book, purchase an indie video game, commission an art piece, gift someone a Patreon. Your support means everything.

There's just something particularly infuriating about the mind-boggling selfishness of the "I want to be able to do a bad thing and I don't want to be called out for it, in fact I want to be praised for it as though I were doing something noble" attitude.

I was trying to do a thread on essentially this but my brain is overheated today and this says it both better and way more succinctly than I was managing.
Bigger than this, I think people should be more skeptical of online leftism that says, "Actually, under capitalism I don't owe other people anything." Oh, your communal philosophy says you can be interpersonally vicious and steal from other people? How convenient!
Always worth taking a moment to remind you if you’re pirating authors’ book you’re a shitty person. You can rail that our profession isn’t a profession all you want. You can paint yourself as an online revolutionary liberating ideas. It’s all bullshit.

You’re just a shitty person who hates writers.

Right? Like, solve for capitalism first, and then things will be free, instead of screwing over the folks who are also just trying to get by.
People who pirate books: “I just think art and literature should be FREE to everyone!”

Yes, I too would love to live in a world where art is accessible freely to all and yet artists are paid a living wage, but as this magical wagical pixie wixie land does not exist, please don’t steal from us.

I can't say what I hope happens to the people behind this site without it getting me into trouble with BlueSky moderation.
Anna's Archive has stolen people's work and then has the audacity to ask for donations.

And honestly with the number of free books available at any point now, there is very little defense I want to hear from people these days.

You can sign up for deal newsletters and get offered 500 free books a day.

Just admit you want what you want when you want it & don't care about anyone else.

I do not even want to know why this is Discourse again, but book pirates are crapweasels and if you steal books you've done a bad thing and should feel bad about yourself.

omg, what a lovely piece on Masquerade on NPR this morning!

I need to do that again.
With 'Masquerade,' audiences can explore the world of 'The Phantom of the Opera'
When Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera closed on Broadway in April of 2023, after 35 years, it was the end of an era.  But a new immersive version of the show – think of it as a remix – h...

I’ve carried and used them since I was 14 and can affirm they are excellent communication devices as well as a potential defensive weapon.
Not only are hand fans superb for hot flashes, you can snap them closed in irritation at people and they flinch.
I have bought a ton of little low tech things over the course of the last couple years and I have made a few purchases that were very small but life changing for a middle aged lady:

-hand fans
-cotton hankies
-cheapass reading glasses
-decent pens (you pen nerds were totally right about pens)

I should've gone to bed an hour ago, bc in the last 45 minutes I've seen two different things that have me fired up in unrestful ways.

One of them is... something I'll talk about later, probably.

The other was a reminder that the university where I got my Master's is gutting arts & humanities.

I'm only halfway through the video, but...YEAH.

My favorite* part of adjuncting was how they deliberately, contractually classified us as not working more than 29 hours a week so that not only were we not eligible for any benefits...

but we can't count that time towards PSLF bc it's not full-time.
This (youtu.be/2AvfOhtmCZY?...) is an older @acollierastro.bsky.social video I must have missed, but it is brilliant in explaining the intensity of the bullshit of the adjunct system, for students and instructors.

My parents took me to a Renaissance faire when I was 11 and it was all over from there.

That's only me being, like, half-flippant.

My career path is *bizarre* on paper, but if you sort of unfocus your eyes, then yeah, it makes perfect sense that I've ended up in immersive experiences.
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

Okay. I have seen Wicked: For Good. And I have Thoughts!

Mute/hide this thread if you do not want to be spoiled for a movie version of a musical that's been out for 22 years. 😅
November 23, 2025 at 2:50 AM
Do people just... not wear headphones anymore? Bc I maintain there's a special place in hell for people who watch videos with the volume on and no headphones in public.

And if I can hear your dumbass videos above the music in the headphones I *am* wearing, your volume is way too fucking loud.

#PretendPanel Nov 22: I do! I love sprints when I'm drafting. They're a great way to force myself to block out distractions. We've started doing monthly leaderboards on the @worldbuildcast.bsky.social Discord, and I love the gamified challenges that @goblincitywriters.bsky.social does.
#pretendpanel, thank you for the wonderful insightful answers yesterday. I wonder...

November 22nd: Do you find external challenges useful? e.g. writeathons, sprinting, prompts etc.

Snippet is from fairly late in the book, and...

There's only one tent.
