BIRDWATCHING watchlist/inspirations

The technology exists to do higher-resolution digital scans of the material presented here (16mm kinescopes of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show) but it's, you know, marginally more expensive and time-consuming than AI upscaling, which sucks ass and destroys the archival fidelity. So why do that?
Jesus Christ, the "remastered" Beatles Anthology documentary they re-released is filled with AI slop. Look at John and Paul's faces, and the "T" on Beatles.

I think AI is mostly moribund but I'm worried that for young people there is a growing dependency on platforms like Chat-GPT. Normal people 25 and over are getting Tired Of This Dumb Shit, but there are a lot of teens who haven't written a paper for themselves in like 2-3 years.
Anecdotally on twitter seeing a big shift the last few days from every AI slop account saying every other creative field is “over” and they’re in control now to now posting about how nobody likes them and it’s not fair and they’ll persevere and real artists respect and uplift eachother

The more I think about this, the more fucked up it is that Mr. Beast -- who for better or worse is functionally a children's entertainer -- is part of this. Truly demonic shit.

Lot of people clowning on New Yorker for this but I'll give them one thing: they make his novel sound close to unreadable.
When a cancelled performer reënters the culture, we expect them to offer us a great work, channelling their newfound clarity into the finest art they’ve ever made. With his new comedy show and début novel, has Louis C.K. met the bar?

Louis C.K.’s Next Chapter
In a new standup special, and a début novel, the comedian navigates murky, post-#MeToo terrain: not quite exiled, not quite welcomed back.

Tom Stoppard was a conservative artist in a way that's nearly completely unidentifiable vis-a-vis the contemporary meaning of the term.

The tenor of American life is priming my brain for thinking conspiratorially so when I read this I go-- why didn't we talk more about the fact that Trump's first wife died from falling down a flight of stairs

A little late to post but this is a Thai tea Basque cheesecake I made for Thanksgiving. It was very good and very autumnal— Thai tea has a lot of spices we associate with the fall like cardamom and star anise.

The two worst things here are:

1) Turkey so dry it turns to sawdust the moment you put a knife to it.

2) Is that just a bowl of macaroni
Karoline Leavitt's Thanksgiving spread. Please dissect.

A brilliant writer who celebrated the dance between the hemispheres of the brain. My wonderful tenth grade English teacher (RIP Mrs. Groos) placed ARCADIA at the end of an unconventional, bespoke syllabus. She loved how nimbly it moves between intellectual play and emotion. I'll cherish it forever.

I've recommended this book to dozens of people over the years: to me it is the great horror novel about the age of social media, written long before social media existed. A nightmare about a society going feral.
Happy Holidays! Every day until Christmas, I'll use this thread to rec a book to help you with your gift list. Let's start with THE TWENTY DAYS OF TURIN by Giorgio De Maria, translated by Ramon Glazov, and republished with a foreword by moi. Buy from your fav indie. (Alt text = more detail.) 1/?

weird that audiences by and large disappeared the moment executives started turning to algorithmic models to determine what projects to greenlight
its so crazy that young people became less interested in movies & tv at the same time weird tech guys mostly started deciding what gets made

Watching THE THIN RED LINE in the same year that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was released was such a mindfuck for fourteen-year-old me. Movies could look and feel like this? They could tell stories this way? They could explore themes like this?

It changed my life.
